Beethoven quote on invites

vintagedreams, 29 November, 2012 at 10:32 Posted on Planning 0 15

I want honest opinions on what you would think if you opened an invite and along the bottom was the Beethoven quote 'ever mine, ever thine, ever ours.' I have loved this since I used Beethoven's letter in an English lit essay at uni, and I feel it sums up the way Oh and I feel about marriage, he also really likes the quote. However I am put off by the fact it is in the sex and the city movie and whilst I love carrie I don't want people to think my quote is tacky or cheesy. It also fits nicely with my shakespeare reading. So do I stick with it because it means something to us, and not worry about what some people might think or leave it off? Am I over thinking it?

Honestly? If i saw that on an invite i would think of the SATC film. It's a bit cheese for me now as when I read it I just think of that.

But if you like it, have it. Not everyone would recognise it from the film.

I'd have it, it's a memory of yours. Never seen the film so wouldn't have linked it.

Massive (tongue in cheek) stereotype here:

The kind of people who watch SATC will think you've copied it from there. The kind of people who recognise it as Beethoven won't have seen SATC (in any incarnation). I would never have made the link to SATC.

    Ha! ?

I think you're overthinking it - clearly, both you and the writers of SATC have excellent taste. I'd be more amused if you used an original SATC quote. I suspect most famous poems and literary excerpts have been used in films/TV/songs on several occasions.

I love SATC but wouldn't have remembered that line from the film. Funky one's signature quote, yes, but not that particular line.

Right you have put my mind at rest, I think I am over thinking it so I will leave it on. Thank you for your help, I never thought I would get so hung up over things like this!

I do have a blank prototype I could have flashed but I am at my mum's and it is at mine. Hoping to be well enough to drive home tomorrow so will flash then.

I say go with it but maybe put beethoven - then the quote.

we are doing something similar on our invites where we are having quotes on the bottom of the pages.

We had a song lyric on ours, but I let people figure it out for themselves. Or not. In my drunken Irish uncle's words "I can't make head nor fecking tail of it".

I've never seen SATC so I wouldn't see at as cheesy. Surely the only people who have seen SATC and cared enough to remember the quote will love SATC so not think it's cheesy? Or if you write Beethoven next to it then it will be clear your reference is more highbrow!

I think it's lovely, not at all tacky. I know it primarily as the Beethoven quote and I can't even remember it from the SATC film.

Carrie reads it to big in bed and then he whispers it to Carrie when they finally get married at the end. I actually love SATC I just don't know that I wanted it to feature in my wedding. It does sum things up for us so I think we will stick with it. ?
