Being sick after alcohol.... poss TMI

*Mini*, 18 March, 2012 at 10:42 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

Now this sounds a very obvious question but I cant really drink without being violently sick. Friday I had 4 glasses of white wine and was sick all day yesterday- I couldnt keep water down even, every sip I took came back up, this carried on untill about 4pm (I had my last drink at 11pm Friday night)

I tend to be sick every time I drink now- anything more than a glass or two. I could understand if I had been mixing my drinks or doing shots etc but it was a quiet night in my local! I wasnt even that drunk.

Had a bit of a google and there is such a thing as sulphite allergy, whihc are contained in white wine- which can manifest in a food poisoning like symptoms- has anyone else have any thing like this happen to them? I dont know anyone who gets as ill as I do from drinking.

I have a friend who cannot drink alcohol at all because it makes him violently sick very quickly, even just half a pint. I don't know anything about the mechanics of it though.

I can't drink at all now because of the awful hangovers I get - last time I did was four years ago and I have 4 half shandys over the course of a night, so in total a pint, and I couldn't move the next day. I wasn't sick, but think I would have been if I had had anymore. Maybe worth a trip to your doc to see if they have any answers?

Your body clearly isn't good a coping with something in wine! Whether its the alcohol or sulphites or something else. Maybe you could have a month of experimenting where ysins rink the same alcohol units but in different spirits and drinks to see which affects you most?

As for the sulphite thing, food/drink that is classed as high sulphite includes wine but also grape juice (yummy!)and dried fruit. So maybe you could try drinking 4 glasses of grape juice one afternoon and see if it makes you feel bad too? If it doesn't then I guess it isn't the sulphites but something else in wine or just alcohol itself.

I only tend to drink white wine so its hard to say. The last time I went out I drank vodka, wine and cocktails and was sick all day after that but then I would have expected that as I was mixing my drinks and doing shots, being silly etc.

I can drink alot less than when I was younger which dosnt bother me, its the huge amounts of sickness that worries me.

Just wondering whether you have ever drank a lot whilst also taking or within two days of finishing the antibiotic metronidazole? It is the one antibiotic they tell you to NEVER drink with or for two days after you've finished the course because apparently you can get this kind of a reaction. You might have had it for a dental infection. I don't know how accurate this is but I do know it is the one they always tell you to not drink anything with whereas other antibiotics it's just advised to not drink heavily

Hope you find out the cause - sounds rubbish.

No I havent had any antibiotics or anything like that. its just some sort of reaction to alcohol I reckon. Sad times, I love a glass of wine.

My friend and I are both unable to tolerate white wine during our periods. Any other time we're fine, but during our periods we end up suffering the same symptoms as you, even after just a couple of glasses. There's something in it that doesn't agree with our hormones!

I used to be like it with alcohol and I've found that if I hammer it earlier on in the evening and stop drinking after midnight (like I did when you came to Brighton) I don't throw up the next day.

Sounds like a bit more than a normal hangover. Iv heard of people becoming intolerant to certain alcoholic drinks. May be the case?
