Best Man... or Woman?

judeclarke, 6 August, 2010 at 13:09 Posted on Planning 0 1

Opinions needed please.

Obviously most men have their brother or best mate as their best man. But my OH doesn't have a brother, and he says I'm his best friend and I can't be 'Best Man' as well as Bride ❤️

He doesn't really have a male friend he wants to ask, so he's considering asking his sister. OK, so it's a bit unorthodox. But we're throwing the rulebook out the window anyway. So the question is - would you have your sister as your 'best man'?

Ironically it is not as unorthadox as you think. While it is not widely known the title was traditionally bestman / bestwoman ... it is just not heard of that much anymore. I am in the same situation. All my male friend are in the army and are away on my wedding day so I am having a bestwoman I have known since I was 4 years old (I don't have a sister or brother so I can't answer that bit)

As long as she doesn't end up "competing with the bride" in some way I see no reason why you can't have a female 'best woman' - like you, we're "throwing the book out of the window" for as much of the superfluous stuff as we can anyway because I think it's mostly designed to get you to spend as much money as you can on things.
