Best wedding planning advice?

butterfly2016, 6 April, 2013 at 20:59 Posted on Planning 0 4

What is the best bit of wedding planning advice you've been given/realised yourself? I'm hoping these will make me think/help me be even more organised!

My number one would be don't stress - but I'm finding that near impossible.

So I think my advice is to get a book, put tabs in it (venue, rings, hair, bridesmaids etc) and write down any ideas, thoughts, websites and suppliers. Plus do doodles of ideas and pop in any magazine cuttings of things you like. I used my book loads in the beggining. It stopped me constantly thinking of things and helped me not forget things! I also wrote down all my quotes and in the back I have a list of things I've paid deposits for and when the final amount is due.

Try to enjoy the planning - it starts to go by very quickly Smiley smile

1- Don't listen to anyone else's opinions on what they think a wedding should be, it is your day and fill it with things that you and your OH love.

2- Don't follow traditions just for the sake of it.

3- You cant please everyone so don't even bother trying.

4- Forums and blog are great for advice and inspiration but don't get sucked in and convince yourself you need XY & Z just because everyone else seems to be having it.

5- Invest in a decent TOG. Your photos will act as a lifelong memory and include all the details from your day that you are likely to forget over time. A TOG will even capture moments you missed because you were busy enjoying other aspects of your day.

We're not married yet, but one thing I'm grateful I did was hand over responsibility for as many things as possible to other people. I'm still controlling most of the wedding decisions, but it's so nice to not have to worry about certain things. Bridesmaids dresses? chosen by them, even the colour (though I gave them a template of 5 colours that would be in the wedding to go with). Men's outfits? I delegated to OH, who then delegated to best man. Flowergirls and pageboys? Chosen by their mums in the end. Most of the big things were jointly chosen by OH and I, so that's left me with ample time to spend on all the fiddly bits I love so well.

I was given loads of advice that ended up not being useful, but it's always nice to hear how others have dealt with planning just a massive event.

    1. Don't worry about all the small details or feel the need to have everything that everyone else has. People won't remember if the colours aren't a complete exact match, guests will just accept your day as it is & your day should be about you & your OH.

    2. If possible, pay for it yourselves & keep a firm eye on parents (& other family) wanting to take over or tell you what/how to do it.

    3. Keep a book/file with everything in it. Keep paper/email trails of any discussions/q & a's, etc with venues & suppliers. Find out at the beginning when deposits are due & when final balances are due - and have them written down.

    4. Take out wedding insurance.

    5. Enjoy yourself!
