Better late than never - divorce and name changes - x-posted.

DaisyCat, 20 July, 2008 at 10:21 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 3

I started the divorce process quite soon as me and exH broke up but never actually signed and sent back the papers for many reasons (apathy and lack of cash largely) but this morning I felt resolved to sort it out since he clearly will not be taking the initiative anytime soon! So, they needed amending quite a lot due to changes since they were first drafted so I have made changes and they are ready to be posted back to sol for amending. Does anyone know once I get the correct ones and sign how long it takes from then to get divorced? Also, I have decided that even though my surname will be different to the children's I want to change my name back - when am I able to do this and do I need to do anything special or can I just start using my birth cert for ID again instead of marriage cert?

    Hi DC,

I think I am a little further along than you by the sound of it as we have Decree Nisi and just waiting for the financial bumpf to go through the courts and the my sol will apply for decree absolute. So can't help with the first bit!

I can help with the name bit though. I have been using my maiden name since I moved house (end of May) so all my bills are in that name. However, my solicitor tells me it is not until I have the final divorce papers that I can apply to have my bank account/driving licence changed (i never changed my passport to my married name, I must have never felt secure enough to do it....at least it has saved me £60 odd quid!)

Hope you are well anyway, did you hear about the internal job you had an intervew for?

You can always change your name by deed poll. I used these people who were very helpful and it was quick and easy.

Adding link might be useful! https://www.deedpoll.org.uk/

Also, I didn't use them after divorce but I don't think the reason makes any difference.

Thanks both. I don't think I need to deed poll as my maiden name is still a legal name for me - imagine if I had never changed in response to getting married for e.g.

TT - I didn't get the job but they said if I do another job first for 6m-1yr then I should be good to get the one I want so not all bad. Congrats on your decree nisi - wish I had pressed on with the divorce ages ago - I have had draft papers sitting on my kitchen side for about 7 months!

I applied for my divorce in December. The final paperwork (signed and agreed) was done in Feburary. We were divorced on the 8th June 2008. Although actually it was the 7th but I didnt get the paperwork/certificate until then. The first thing I did was change my bank account details.

I never changed my passport either so that wasn't a problem for me (infact I opened a new bank account with a different bank using my passport in my maiden name before I was divorced).

    Hope it goes smoothly.
