Between ceremony and reception

slinkysarah, 3 December, 2010 at 16:13 Posted on Planning 0 6

Just wondered what everyone is doing between the two? I realised the other day my ceremony would end then I would have a few hours gap until the reception! I'm all sorted now though thank goodness!

Anyone else had this issue?

The day goes so fast, you wont even notice the gap!. Our meal finished about 5pm and the evening reception didnt start til 7.30. Our tog took us for some private photos against the night sky and we did some mingling. Think some of our guests when back to the rooms to freshen up abit and then came back for the evening reception.

Ah forgot to mention that ? although my original 'gap' was about 4 hours so that would have been a lot of photos!

We've got a couple of hours to fill, haven't decided for definite what to do yet, but obviously photos will take up a bit of it and there'll be drinks. We were thinking of providing some sort of entertainment for our guests like giant Jenga/Connect 4/etc or maybe a mini casino or something like that and I've also seen a modern violinist, but it'll all depend on how the budget goes.

I had a bit of a panic last week as I noticed a large gap in our day, however, after posting it here, most people suggested that guests can use the time to freshen up and we can spend some time talking to our guests without loud(ish) music playing.

I'm going to have a word with our VOG to see if some of the time could be used for the recording of guest messages, too.

Your time between ceremony and reception is traditionally the time for the majority of your pics to be taken. However do try and think about your timings with regards to your guests. Firstly, if you are having a lunchtime ceremony, anytime between 12.30-1.30pm this would usually be your guests lunchtime which means that they wouldn't have eaten since breakfast. If you then have a journey to the venue and another 2 hour wait during photos, your guests potentially won't eat until 4.30pm/5pm when you are called through. Guests will remember being hungry at a wedding which is something you don't want.

If this is the case, think about having a shorter pre reception (I usually try and have no longer than 1.5 hrs as although you will be having fun with photos and catching up with friends and family, if there are people there as a couple and they don't know anyone else, it could seem quite long!) and serve canapes to help abate their hunger. Make sure that you go straight into food service and dont have speeches first as again food would be delayed further.

Oviously if you are having a later ceremony, from 2/2.30pm onwards, guests will hopefully have had lunch which allows you to have a longer reception etc.

Things you can do though during your preception to help entertain guests is to provide garden games, a selection of board games, magician (budget depending), arrange a treasure hunt around the gardens or venue, simply provide live music such as classical guitar, harp, saxaphone, string quartet. There are so many different things you could do and something for every budget!
