Beware - invitation / save the date sizing!

TreacleTart, 11 June, 2014 at 14:34 Posted on Planning 0 11

OMG! Just nearly had a meltdown in the post office (i am generally stressed and PMT-ed and ragh today anyway and this has nearly just broken me!) Just went to post my save the dates - they're cute little things, about 11 x 7.5cm in size, Id spent hours writing out the envelopes in nice calligraphy style writing and was really chuffed with them! But as they were a little thick (just on that stupid 5mm borderline of whether theyre a letter or large letter) I thought Id better check before sticking on the stamps Id already bought. So I hand one over at the counter to check and despite being little and easily small enough to fit in a letterbox it was hit and miss as to whether they fit through the 'standard letter size slot'...Phew I think, glad I didnt waste 40 stamps, and just about to buy some large letter stamps when she goes 'actually, I think theyre too small to post'.....WHAT?! apparently recommended minumum size for postage is 9 x 14cm - really?! did anyone else know this? So she said she couldnt accept them over the counter, and did that whole 'well you could take your chances and put them in the letter box but because theyre small they might not get there' thing. I phoned Royal Mail and they said the same (obviously) but they also said Royal Mail do not intentionally destroy any post that CAN be posted....as far as I'm concerned the address is perfectly nice and clear, I havnt written it in miniscule writing, and the correct postage will be on them so Im really tempted to just post them anyway and see what happens. Might do a few and see if they get there....the woman at Royal Mail just kept saying if its too small it wont go through the machinery correctly (far enough) and that theyll have to be hand sorted - tbh I dont care if they have to be hand sorted, even if it does mean theres a small delay in getting them there. TBH because of the calligraphy style writing its unlikely their machines will be able to read them anyway so theyll have to be handsorted anyway.

But what the hell! All that time spent writing, and putting our little date stmap on the envelopes, and licking the gross envelope glue for nothing?! and they'll look stupid having an envelope within an envelope....AND THEY'RE JUST NOT REALLY THAT SMALL! im really out of proportionally peed off at this!

So yeah, word of warning for those who also want to send out little post! x

    I feel your pain!

I have no faith in royal mail whatsoever. I had a text yesterday from a girl i used to work with saying another girl at the office had been asking if girl A had got her invite because she hadn't received one and had got a STD. I had posted them WEEKS ago. It has less than 20 miles to travel and it hasn't got there. WTF.

Another one that had to get to the midlands took a month! I hate them! It's so expensive for a dreadful service. Mine were normal envelopes with neatly typed lables too so no excuses there. I had to call round checking if people got them so now they feel like I am chasing RSVP's eben though they aren't due til the end of July.

    Grrrr

    Anyway, you have my sympathy!

Awful isnt it! and you dont want to look like youre chasing people up, royal mail makes us look like crazy people with no patience! whenever I post birthday or christmas cards to my parents now Ive moved they never get there either, and they meet the bloody sizing regulations! also just realised I posted the same post on here about 3 million times (well, ok, three times) cus it kept saying 'error' after Id hit post. The world is against me today. I might just hand out the ones I can physically do...I just thought how nice it is to get fun things in the post, so I wanted to post everybodys!

I used the same size as you fr my RSVP's and have managed to get them all back to me intact throught the post, so I really wouldn't worry. Some have travelled from Spain, France, and even Australia, and managed to get through.

Really?! i think I love you for telling me that! thanks!! well I'm sure Ive posted small cards before so I couldnt believe it when she said they couldnt accept them, if it wasnt for the thickness issue Id never have even gone to the post office n would have merrily posted them in blissful ignorance...

I've received tiny RSVP envelopes before, and returned them by Royal Mail. I know the wedding couple got them, so they CAN process them!

I'd say to all brides though, beware the 5mm width sizing rule though. It catches a lot of us out with having to pay increased stampage to send invitations!

btw, I also just complained to Zazzle about the printing of our Thank You cards. We ordered the correct size for UK posting with regular stamps, but they sent envelopes with them that are 2 inches too big, and would have to go as 'large letters', and there an extra £40 in postage. I've asked Zazzle to refund the order cost of buying new envelopes....

I wouldn't have had a clue and sometimes at Christmas, people send those really small square cards and they've arrived OK!

I hate these stupid rules. The deal is, if you want to post something, they should flipping deliver it! ARGH I am cross on your behalf! Damn machines taking over human beings.

I also despise the 5mm slot thing, geez a save the date isn't a large letter, it's a small letter, they can bloody see that, sod the thickness!!

Could you stick a pretty postcard to the back of your lovely posh envelopes to make it the sufficient size they require?

Thanks for the warning TreacleTart.... I guess when it comes to sending mine I might just use a courier... at least they have no problem delivering anything - AS IT IS THEIR JOB AND BUSINESS MODEL (Stupid Royal Mail. I don't like them. I like my postman, that's about it).

My save the dates were 8.5 x 8.5cm and I think everyone received them just fine. They made it to America and Australia too so I don't think you need to worry too much! X

Haha thanks HeavyMetalMaiden, I appreciate your anger :-D I just stood gaping murderously at the poor woman behind the counter! And thanks off the reassuring noises from everyone who's posted even smaller things than that without problem, I would have too if I wasn't trying to be conscientious n making sure I'd got the right letter stamp on....large letters my arse *grumble*

H2b is a postman and said he has never ever heard of this (worked for Royal Mail 13years). He said he has delivered much smaller letters. Fingers crossed there won't be a problem.
