Bizarre critter in my shower - can anyone help?

Stazzle, 18 August, 2009 at 11:59 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 16

This is a bit of a weird one, but I've tried Googling different things and am not getting anywhere, so I wonder if any Hitchers would be able to shed some light? Basically on Friday evening I found this really weird, horrible bug type thing in my shower - I had never seen one like it before and had no idea what it was.

To try and describe it as best as I can, it was almost like a very small version of a frog, as it kept jumping too - except it definitely wasn't a baby frog or anything as it had feelers...? I went embarrassingly girly and put the shower on full blast so it went down the plug hole. Then on Saturday I cleaned the whole bathroom out using pretty strong Cif cream, so you'd think that if it had survived being washed down the plughole that would have probably killed it afterwards.

Anyway, this morning I went into the bathroom to have a shower and the exact same thing was back, crawling around my bath! Does anyone have any idea what the hell it is and whether it may be actually surviving in my plughole?! I just can't see how it would have survived through Cif cream and obviously lots of shower gel, shampoo etc since we've obviously been having showers since Friday.

Or maybe it's not coming from the plughole?? But I did clearly blast the water down that way and I swear I saw it go down. Very confused, as well as grossed out ?

Some sort of cricket? Sounds too small to be a Parktown Prawn but if it was I am emigrating.

I have no idea what it is but I usually bleach the massive spiders we get in our bath because I've had them come back up through the plughole after I've just rinsed them away, oh and run the hot water for a while to make sure

? Sorry, I really should have warned you.

They are ghastly, ghastly things. Once had one in my flat that survived for 24 hours after my cat had eaten half of it ? but as I say it sounds too small to be one - they're heryooge.

It sounds like some sort of cricket - they have longer antennae than grasshoppers and some species have squatter bodies (shorter wings).

How horrible to find one in the bathroom though - glass and piece of paper next time - get it out of the window.

Could it be a frog hopper (spit bug)?

Thanks for your replies - I suppose it could possibly be a cricket of some sort - didn't think to take a picture as just wanted to get rid of it as soon as I could!!

Thing is, we have been using the hot water every day at least twice down that plug hole so it just strikes me as bizarre that it's survived!

Size-wise, I would say it's probably a little bit bigger than a 50 pence piece (bet I sound like a complete wimp now)

Way too scared to Google the Parktown Prawn thing ?

Have googled and am pretty sure it's not a frog hopper/spit bug. Didn't look like a cockroach either, it didn't seem to have that sort of hard, round shell that they have.

So that just leaves cricket, or some other alien species ?

And oh. my. god. those Parktown Prawns...*shudder*
