Blimey! Shocked at the price

Croyde, 16 January, 2009 at 20:19 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

We live in a victorian house that is slowly being renovated by us, we are about to have the hall plastered and finished so we had Churchill Cabinets round tonight to measure up for 4 bespoke radiator covers to hide our ugly radiators and hopefully make everything look lovely and finished.

Well...the sales man made several early comments about our ages and how expensive the covers are etc, put my back up a bit as he has no idea about our financial situation or what we earn etc etc ...anyway after pricing them up (all singles so not massive) the cost for 4 covers fitted was a massive £2,217!!!

We got him down to £1,500 but we ended up saying thanks but no thanks. he said 'I knew you wouldnt buy at these prices when I walked in, people your age never do!'

?

Cheeky so and so - although he may be right because that's a lot of money for radiator covers!

If me (and to be fair I am in a contrary mary mood) I would be complaining to his office about his sales attitude. What you would be prepared to pay is none of his business if he's going to base it purely on age! If his disposition had been different you might have been prepared to pay what ever he asked! Is there anyone else locally that you could use. Have to say that from what you've said, what you want is not going to come cheap especially if you want it to match in. You might be able to find some one by asking friends if they know anyone. (If you were local I could probably give you a couple of recommendations but I doubt you're in Devon as not many are!).

Thanks Nick - have you used them? I found their site last weekend and thought that we would see what Churchills came out at as they come and fit for you etc etc

I experienced the same sort of sales attitude when I wanted to get a quote from Dolphin for my new bathroom.

He asked me what my budget was over the phone when I said we didnt have a budget at the moment as we were checking out the market and seeing how much it cost he told me that if my budget was under £x amount then there would be no point in him travelling to see us as they would be more expensive!! Hence to say we didnt buy our new bathroom from them!

We have used the link below.

Have a look on yell.com for places in your area if you want one made to measure rather than a standard size.

I hate talking to salespeople which H knows. We had a company come round to quote for some french windows, and I told H I didn't want to talk to them so I would just stay upstairs (he has a much better tolerance for listening to the rubbish they spout, and I trusted him 100% to make a sensible decision). Anyway, once the salesman got to our house, he asked if I was around and H said I was busy working or something upstairs, at which the salesman downright refused to continue unless I came down and talked to him, because he'd seen too many men change their minds once they'd "talked to the missus". H said no, he was dealing with it himself, and the guy still refused to carry on unless I was there! H had to show him out in the end without talking about the windows at all. There was absolutely no need for me to be there at all - he just wanted to turn on the pressure. Ridiculous.

My mum has some - really nice actually - and they were £54 painted white or £30-40 something unpainted - B&Q - obviously not bespoke but a range of sizes available.

I third Nick's suggestion.I also second Rache's suggestion. I've used jali for a bespoke one in an awkward corner and b&q for standard white ones.from memory all jali ones are unfinished mdf so need to be painted. B&q have some finished ones in white.

Sales folk are really cheeky. I once stood for over an hour in a car show room waiting for someone to approach me as I wanted to buy a car, brand new, cash, with most of the extras attached, I think it was because I was young and dressed in pale pink combats and a pink fleece that I was completely ignored by everyone. Their loss in the end.

We got it recently when we bought our new bedroom set, its over 3,000 and the woman looked and spoke at us like I had mis read the prices and that it was 300.00. My H put it down to the fact that I was dressed a bit casual for the shop (I'm heavily pregnant so have limited clothes)

It really really pisses me off. B&Q do have really nice covers.

Thanks all, we cant use DIY store ones due to our deep skirting boards, each rad is thermastated and we need access to the thermastats and the previous people had the radiators fitted so that they sit really high, 15 cms higher than the standard tallest DIY cover.

We used a local carpenter (he was doing some other work for us at the time). Definitely a great option if you need some special specs.
