blogging

Does anyone do this?

i'm thinking about starting one. not a diary type thing, but i'm feeling the need to re-hone my writing and researching skills and am wondering whether a blog might be the way to go.

if you do blog, what are your 'themes'? how often do you update? how much time to you spend researching / writing your posts? what blog site do you use? can you track traffic to see who/how often it is being read? are there any income streams associated with your blog, and if so, what?

?

I do, but I find I struggle to find time for it.

I use it to upload pictures of my children, and currently, our extension.

It is extremely dull for people who don't know me as I don't really muse about "life in general"

There are some wonderful blogs out there. My favourites are foodie ones, as some of the recipes they show are lovely, and relatively easy to do.

I can show you mine if you wish, but would prefer to email it, as it is quite personal. (photos mostly)

I have my own anonymous blog. I keep it completely confidential and separate from the rest of my life.

I use it to empty my head and blather on about things that I don't necessarily want to bore my real life friends or family with. Most of it is pure and utter fluff and nonsense, such as TV shows, theatre, music etc. but occasionally it gets more in-depth. It just depends on my mood. I blog anything from a few times a day to nothing for a month.

I use LiveJournal. No read counter on there. You can friends-lock your entries so only people you are 'friends' with can read them. To be honest, I only stay with LJ as I have joined lots of communities on there, otherwise I would go elsewhere as LJ is a bit pants.

I have a blog for work, but it's mainly to show recent work, not at all anything masterful literary!

    I do sporadically on MySpace.

I seem to get an awful lot of reads, though god knows how. Sadly I don't even know how you go about searching for somebody else's. I only ever go as far as writing my own ?

You've never struck me as a loon, so If you want to have a look I can mail details which would help you find it, but I'd rather not post them here.

Loml writes a politics blog. Happy to PM you the link if you like - he's an awesome writer. ? He updates most days, but not every day, averaging I suppose about 500-1000 words per post. I think he spends 2 or 3 hours on the longer posts. No income stream but he's had a few offers to appear on telly which he's turned down. You can absolutely track traffic to see how many people are reading it, where they've nevigated from etc.

I don't blog daily, but I have a travel blog and used it when I was in South America a few months ago. I'll use it again when I go travelling again as it's a great way of keeping a diary as it were and for friends & family to see what I've been doing. It can be quite time consuming - I found I was spending around 30 minutes writing it up and publishing.

Haven't a scooby, sorry. ? I just know you can. Worryingly, lots of people seem to find his blog whilst researching the activities of ladies who like to remove their clothes for the delectation of the masturbating masses.

This isn't quite the same thing, but I also felt the need to flex my writing/analytical muscles recently. I write anyway so I've joined a site where you post your own work and review that of others. Most of the work on there is actually of quite a decent quality, so the reviews are really stretching to write.

I didn't want to blog because I wasn't sure what I'd write about.

Could something like this work for you, maybe?

I had a blog from 2004-early 2005 about general stuff, but it got increasingly hard to come up with interesting subjects for posting, especially after I became much less inclined to post about family subjects when it was clear that Lexi wasn't developing normally. (I'm sure there'd be a fair amount of value in a first-hand blog about parents' experiences of dealing with autistic children, but I didn't feel up to writing one).

And when a colleague told me that he'd not so much read it as scoured it for work-related dirt, I decided it wasn't worth the risk, so I deleted it. There wasn't any dirt, as it happens (work issues weren't entirely off limits, but I kept strictly within the terms of my contract), but you never know what people will use against you if they're so minded. If I remember rightly, this story came up at about the time I was thinking of packing it in.

More recently (just under a year ago), I started up another blog, but it's an ultra-specialist one that's used as a repository for background research into obscure areas of central and eastern European cinema, which I write a lot about professionally. And I've been very gratified by the response – it's led to a heavyweight academic journal commission (from Poland, no less), and more recently Britain's leading expert in one of the areas I write about told me that he was a regular reader. Which was as alarming as it was flattering...

Our daughter has Asperger's but it isn't a subject I blog on. Oddly enough it's never occured to me. Then again reading the blog of someone in a similar situation would be helpful sometimes as most Asperger information tends to apply to boys (Asperger's manifests itself quite differently in boys than it does to girls). Hmmm.

I've just started a photography blog - much more for my own benefit to keep a log of what I read and learn, in an effort to improve my photography.

I use blogger and have a question - is there anyway that readers can identify you (as long as you don't of course use personal references and details)?

I have one for our house renovations. It was started in 2006 and is still ongoing. I also use google analytics to see how many people visit. It isn't joined with google so no-one can search for it. So obviously I have nosey people from FB looking. My dad visits the site weekly too!

I'm also hoping to do some collaborative blogging soon...

I have several blogs, but only one that's remotely active. It's a place for ranting about things, mostly dreadful science in the media. I set it up so my work colleagues could still listen to me rant when on maternity leave ?

Am hoping to get some co-bloggers soon to help with the ranting.

Seconded - it's much the best free blogging tool I've come across, and miles better than Blogger (or at least Blogger circa 2005, but I get the impression it hasn't changed much)
