Blue screen and "Unmountable Boot Volume"

Roobarb, 21 January, 2009 at 19:15 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 4

This is what has happened to my computer ?

Is it fixable by someone who doesn't know much about computers, or is it a job for the professionals? Have seen something online about resetting the BIOS defaults but will that make me lose all my data on the computer?

? and again if don't reply, it's cos I can only lurk!

Oh dear, in my micro knowlege of computers (i.e could write what I know on a postage stamp ?!) this is not a good thing. In fact, when it happened to my 'puter a few years ago it had to go back for a whole new hard drive. Not sure you wanted to hear that though ?

Always worth trying Microsoft's support pages, assuming it's a Microsoft OS.

It sounds like your hard disk has gone kaput, or that your boot drive (the drive that holds the start up information) is set to something that isn't there. Accompanied by a blue screen, I would suggest it's your hard disk. If it's Windows, try putting the CD in, and booting from it.

Altering or resetting your BIOS does not mean you lose your data from your windows folders. You will lose the data if you have to reinstall Windows.

I would take it to a repair place to see whether they can retrieve your data off the hard disk, esp. if you have photos & stuff that you want.

My old pc did this quite a bit - if you google the error code you're getting then you should get a fairly straightforward fix for it.

It does involve entering the startup and changing it to boot from the Windows CD to do the fix - so if you don't have the CD then you;ve got a bit of a problem - and then a small amount of very simple command line stuff to fix the boot problem.

    Good luck
