Bold make up or the natural look?

Hugo Brambles, 7 December, 2009 at 22:45 Posted on Planning 0 10

I've just had my trial done and I love it, it's very dark smokey eyes, natural lips, very glam. I'm just a little unsure if it's too glam. My dress is very floaty and pretty, quite vintage looking really. Having said that I did ask for smokey eyes thinking I don't want a natural look as thats what I can do myself! The point is that I want a look I couldn't recreate myself and I want to look 'made up'. If theres one day when you can get away with looking a bit different its your wedding day. I had two friends point of views, one loved it wouldn't change it, the other loved it but thought it was quite a change from my usual look and could maybe tone it down a bit?

Ooh not sure what to do!! I am so bad at decisions!!

Do you still have the makeup on? If so, can you get someone to take some pictures to see what it looks like on camera? The smokey eyes might not look so bold in a picture as they do in real life.

I'd probably go for something a bit more exciting than usual, but don't want to be overly glam as it'll be a daytime as well as an evening look, and in the summer there'll be more daylight than darkness Smiley smile But if you love it and you think it'll match your look, then go for it!

The rule of thumb for makeup at wedding is not to look TOO diferent from yourself, after all your hubby is marrying you for you...

Is it possible to see a pic of you normally?

Its important that you feel comfortable wearing more makeup then you are normally used to, ie for me I wear makeup to go to the shop lol! So if I had a very natural look on my wd I would feel terribly naked!

If you are not used to makeup then avoid something like this

And go more down this avenue:

If you are olive or dark skinned then you can get away with a wee bit more smokey... Also it depends on your eye colour, for green and hazel maybe go for browns, greys, for darker eyes, dark grays and even black...

Also remembr you can still look "done up" with natural makeup if its done right, Natural is just more suited to those that wear little or no makeup from day to day.

I hope this helps a little?

I think for your pictures, your makeup would normally be a bit heavier than you would wear day-to-day. It really depends on how you normally wear your make up and how much. you don't want to look too different from yourself but you do want to look 'special'.

Its an individual choice - do you have any pics of your trial???

Thanks all!! Thanks for those links - my look was just like the top one. I don't wear makeup day to day but that's only because a) I work outside with dogs and it's just not the enviroment for it!! And b) and lack of skill on my part in applying it!! I would love to do the smokey eye look for an evening out say, I wouldn't wear it in the daytime though. I have quite light skin and blue eyes and the colours were all browns. It looked lovely!! I think to as has been said, it would look very different in photos to real life and also it made a difference when I looked at myself in the brightly lit bathroom mirror compared to my dingy lounge lighting!! It was last night and dark so would be interested to see it in the daylight.

I do have a photo but no idea how to get it off my phone and onto pc, I don't have a wire or anything!

I have been told to not wear any 'light reflective' makeup on the day (perhaps in evening) as it looks odd in the photographs - my photographer told me that so yours may have some tips for you?

Also perhaps gol bolder in the eveing - and when retouching after the reception - add a more smoky eye and deeper lip gloss etc

I went quite natural-ish and wish I went a bit more glam! My make up didn't stand out much on the day and in the photographs I looked like I hardly had any on! Go with what you feel. If you want a different look to your normal go for it, as long as it's not too "out there" and your other half can still recognise you!!

Glam will def go with a vintage looking dress, however so would natural. How are you having your hair and what hair accessories/jewellery. Try and tie it in with the overall look without having everything and going over the top! I went to a wedding once and the brides dress was huuuge and very detailed, loads and loads of very blingy jewellery, including big necklace, huge tiara and earrings, massive wedding hair and tonnes of make up. She was such a naturally pretty girl and she didn't need it all!! It was a bit too much.

Have you got any photos of your make up trial, maybe you could post them on here!

Thanks all! We're not having a professional tog I'm afraid so no tips there! I also wouldn't want to try and attempt to do smokey eyes myself for the evening! I'd look like a panda lol.

Thanks Kelly for that, that's really interesting to read. It's not too out there at all, it just feels more than normal because it is but I kind of like that. The dress itself is vintage looking and empire line with no train so not OTT, it's quite understated. My hair is going to be down and hopefully wavey/full of body. No necklace, vintage looking earings and a bracelet. I have a diamontee headband but not convinced I will wear it lol!! Will have to see how it looks at the hair trial.

The pic is cr@p quality on my phone!

I think you should go for what you feel like, are you swaying more towards glam and made up? Glam will go with your overall look from the sounds of it. If you are unsure about your two looks, perhaps go for something in between the two if you think it might look a bit too much. If going heavy on the eye, try and make sure it is quite light and nude on the lips with perhaps a nice gloss. The top picture on one of the previous posts I think perhaps looks a bit too heavy as empasis has been placed on both the eyes and lips. A general rule is emphasise one or the other, particularly when going for heavy smokey eyes.

Don't worry, you're bound to look fab on your wedding day, with either look!

Thank you. Yes had a nude lip tint with bit of gloss in the middle. We didn't actually get time to try out a lighter look as I'd not realised how long it would take and had to go out for my Dad's birthday meal so was kicking myself about that but not a lot I could do. I could have another trial but can't afford it so will have to go with what I feel on the day I guess!!
