queenofspain, 5 October, 2011 at 21:15 Posted on Planning 0 5

Argh! We want to go away 28 december to 2 january but we are really struggling to find somewhere!! Original plan of a little lodge/cottage in the uk went out the window because none of them do the dates we want.

Now we are trying to find a city break somewhere like Berlin but have no idea what im looking for! has anyone been to Berlin? any recomendations? Would like to do maybe a bit of sightseeing, and maybe some sort of show in the evening? :-)

Went to Berlin a few years ago, but we were poor students so stayed in hostels, which is probably not what you're looking for on a honeymoon!

There is loads of awesome historical stuff around; try to go on one of the city walking tours if they're running when you go. The Reichstag is worth a visit, and there are several big museums on "Museum Island" plus loads of others dotted all about the place. The Holocaust memorial and museum is harrowing but I think it's worth it. The museum at Checkpoint Charlie is very famous but always packed - only go if you're really keen. Charlottenburg, which is not far outside the city, is also nice.

If you're going in winter I think they will have several Christmas markets - go for the Gluehwein and toasted almonds if nothing else! There's shopping on Unter den Linden and at the Sony Centre. Berlin also has awesome nightlife, loads and loads of cool bars and clubs. If it's still there, Victoria Bar on Potsdamer Strasse is one of my favourite cocktail places ever. Hope that helps!

I went to Berlin a couple of years ago in early January. Sightseeing is fantastic, though it was tough with the weather. Ice everywhere, really really cold. We stayed in a great hostel, but again probably not what you want. Personally because of the weather I'd be more inclined to go to Madrid or Barcelona at that time of year.

I've been but many years ago when the wall was still up. It was one of the most moving and enjoyable holidays I've had but obviously the atmosphere will be completely different now the wall is down. I visited the Olympic Stadium which was an awesome site empty and quite scary standing in the same spot as Hitler once stood! Also the airlift memorial and crossed through Checkpoint Charlie (it was open then) into the East which was a sad place then. A lot of the other main sites such as the Brandenburg Gate, Parliament buildings etc were surrounded by barriers so you could see but not get too close. The shopping was great and the food, especially the little stands on the street that sell wonderful 'hot dogs' - my fav was curryvurst (sp?) yummy.

I Broke my foot in Berlin a week and a half ago whilst my OH ran the marathon. It's a lovely city. We stayed in the intercontinental on budepesser st quite near the Zoo and Aquarium. The hotel was stunning and we got a deal on hotels.com. I have been to Berlin a couple of times now and love it more every time (even though the trip 2 weeks ago was a disaster) if you need any more info please drop me a line.

My OH proposed in Berlin! It's a lovely place to visit, plenty of architecture and history. We did most of the major sites in a weekend, the underground system makes it easy to get about. The main catherdral is definately worth a stop, there are loads of squares with fountains, and loads of parks with statues.

I can recommend 2 restaurants in particular: Bas'il - italian, fabulous food, great selection of wines, and Der Kartoffelkeller (potato cellar), traditional German potato dishes, brilliant atmosphere. I can also recommend a trip to Berlin zoo - hot huge but there are some interesting stories behind some of the statues. We had a decent room in a Novotel on the outskirts of the city.
