Bread - what do you call it?

Lillythepink, 28 March, 2008 at 11:18 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 87

So where I'm from, it's a bread bun. Where I live now, it's a barm. It's a roll in other places.

What do you call the round bread product in which one might place bacon or other fillings? Is that local to you? Where are you anyway? ?

It's a roll to me. Occasionally a bun but only really if it's for a burger. I'm from Surrey so no barms down here.

English muffin is a round bread type item, certainly, but it's flat on both sides and comes ready split. It is sweeter than a bread bun, and can only be tolerated toasted. Think McMuffin.

Can be a bap, barm or bun. I'm from Manchester.
When I was at uni in sheffield they referred to them as cobs. Never understood that.

If you mean the big ones (about as big as your hand), that's a bap or a barm cake to me (North-West)

Bread roll (home counties upbringing). Crusty ones are crusty rolls.

Big flat floury ones are baps (or were, until baps meant tits, there was a sandwich shop when we lived in the UK cunningly called Lovely Baps)

It's a roll. Baps are a subset of rolls, as are croissants etc.

I only tend to call them cobs when they are crusty, have something in them (usually cheese & onion) and are eaten down the pub (although i stop short of a pint of bathams)

Oh yes, indeed they do. I used to go in the Lamp in Dudley on a friday for my dads shows, they had huge crusty cobs with loads of cheese and onion on <dribble>
    now I want one?

I'm not sure I would consider a croissant a roll. I think it is more closely related to pastries.

I can't tell you the number of times I've been mocked by my Birmingham friends when I call them breadcakes in my broad Yorkshire. But that's what they are!

It's a cob but I try to use roll when I remember after some serious confusion at a bakers 'up north' when I was little.

    East Midlands
