Breakfast before going to the gym

SPLODGIE, 2 September, 2008 at 17:58 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

Hi

I am going to try going to the gym before work for the first time tomorrow. I can have my normal breakfast of tea and toast when I get to work but should I have anything to eat before I go as well? Im thinking I should have a banana and a cup of tea.

Thanks

You shouldn't need anything if you're eating properly the night before - a cuppa is good to get you going but food may give you indigestion. Very much an individual thing.

I personally wouldnt have anything to eat. I cannot eat anything less than 2 hours before a run or gym session as I get a terrible stitch and feel sick. Like Baron says, as long as you have a good meal the night before and you are having a good breakfast when you get to work you should be fine without.

On the rare occasions I do a morning work out it is always on an empty stomach but it's a case of personal prefernce rather than what's "right" IYSWIM.

If I'm going to the gym on a work day I always go beforehand. I never have any breakfast but ensure that I take plenty of water. I find that if I have something to eat or drink then I'm more likely to feel ill either during or afterwards.

It's definitely an individual thing - I had a Body Pump class at 9.30 this morning and I was on the treadmill at just gone 9. I got up at 7.30 and had a bowl of Special K before I went out and I still had "shaky arms" when I did the chest part of the BP class!!

I am very sensitive to blood sugar drops so I tend to need something before a morning work out otherwise I can feel very light headed. I've found a banana smoothie, a very ripe banana or a meal replacement type drink works really well for me. If you find yourself feeling dizzy or weak with morning workouts, it might be worth giving one of the above a try.

I can't eat before exercise in the morning, at all. makes me feel very sick indeed. i guess you need to try it with and without, and see which works better for you?

Thanks everyone. Sorry I left work in a rush last night without replying.

I had 1/2 a banana and drank lots of water at the gym and that was fine. Im now enjoying my cup of tea and toast at my desk.

    Thanks again
