Brides Who Make Speeches

Guy Wade, 9 August, 2013 at 13:59 Posted on Planning 0 31

The Times today has a big article about the number of brides who are now making speeches. It behind a paywall so I wont link to it, but here's a picture of a bit where some nobody spouts their uninteresting view:

It was also picked up by the Telegraph - https://www.telegraph.co.uk/women/10232556/Brides-challenge-tradition-to-speak-at-their-wedding.html

So - which brides here will be making a speech?

Guy

    Great PR, Guy!

Kate @ SkinnyBoy is in there too! It's like a HIB feature! ?

    Trumpet, blown! ?

I was going to do a speech to make some sort of feminist point in the name of equality and blah, but actually I'd rather not have the hassle and would much rather be able to relax and get p*ssed.

I didn't make a speech. To be honest, it never really crossed my mind.

I will not be making a speech, mainly because I hate public speaking! I turn into a beetroot gibbering wreck

I'm thinking about it, and Mr BRC has said he'd be happy if I did. I'd do it in addition to the grooms, FoB and best man speech, probably at the end. Going to be careful not to just repeat what Mr BRC says though!

I can see the appeal but I would be way too nervous.

Being the centre of attention will make me nervous enough without getting up and making a speech.

In my experience I have not seen any change and the rate is about 1 in every 15 weddings

I didn't make a formal speech. But I did speak after dinner to thank everyone again, invite them downstairs for the reception, inform them that there were drinks behind the bar for them, and to have a good time.

I didn't but my sister did and that was mainly cos her hubby didn't want to and only did a really quick one. Hers was lovely and very sweet.

Not meaning to de-rail the thread but what's the norm with CBM or MOH's speaking on behalf of the bride? Also, do fathers of the groom normally do speeches? **Edit - just a musing....!

I made a speech. I was desperate to have the chance to thank my son and my groom publicly, for being so bloody amazing and for making my life the best it's ever been. And I wanted to thank those (including my son) who helped me beat depression more than once and get to such a great place where I was able bag a guy like my husband. I was bubbling over with love and with happiness and my speech was another way of expressing it!

I didn't plan to, but ended up ad libbing one on the day. I think the bride has spoken at about 1/3 of the weddings I've been to. Never had a speech from CBM/FoG, t4yt0.

I will be making a joint speech with my OH as he is really nervous about the whole thing, I can then make sure he doesn't miss any thank-yous. It will be short and sweet and may include a little gushing about my wonderful groom depending on how emotional I am feeling! Smiley winking I really want to make a fuss of my mum but it's difficult as I don't want my new MIL to feel left out!!

The "Usual" speeches are FOB, Groom, Best Man. I've seen lots of variations. I've personally never seen the Father of the Groom give a speech, but I'm sure it happens.

I gave a speech; not particularly long, but long enough to say some lovely things about my new husband (and have a bit of fun with my family who had occasionally joked that I might forever be a crazy cat lady!). I went first, which was just as well as I was a wreck after my husband and my dad had done theirs.

I have heard that's it's becoming more popular for brides to give a speech but I've been to a lot of weddings over the last 2 years and have only seen one bride do it. I can understand people not wanting to do it; fortunately I'm fairly comfortable speaking in public but many people aren't. Saying that, I did a reading at my sister's wedding and I nearly broke down and was horribly nervous- I was completely calm speaking at my wedding. Weird.

I wont be doing one, but that's more to do with the fact that we wont be having speeches at all.

Last year it seemed really popular and loads of our brides gave a speech (about a third i'd say) but this year I don't think we've had any brides give a speech at all.

I have seen and photographed bridal speeches, and it always stumps me why it they are so rare...

Okay, so way-back-when, women were traditionally seen and not heard, (PAH!) but nowadays I feel this is a tradition which could be dispensed with and no one would bat an eyelid. ?

I am definitely speaking. We met on a Jubilee Sailing Trust voyage (www.jst.org.uk) and I am going to talk about the wonderful charity that lead us to each other! My dad had a stroke 17 years ago and won't be able to do a speech, so my Godfather is going to instead.

I can't decide! I don't really want to make a speech, but I have written a poem type thingy for oh. It seems a bit corny though and i think it rhymes way too much. Will probably just write in it his card.

I won't be making one, i'm quite shy and the thought of speaking in front of everyone would make me ill before hand haha.
Will leave it to OH, Dad & best man on this one and I can relax and laugh at them being nervous.

    Go Guy!!

    I won't be making a speech.

I'm far too easily overcome by emotion to be able to say what I'd love to say. I suppose I could write something and ask someone else to read it for me if it gets too much.

Oh, no way. i'd be absolutely bricking it, and since i don't drink I wouldn't even be able to have some wine to take the edge off. One of my bridesmaids will be giving a speech though - I said years ago when we were sharing a student house that I wanted a speech in the form of a pub quiz at my wedding, and she's decided to hold me to it!

    Oh really?

I thought the grooms speech was something they wrote on their own.

I've always thought I'd like to do a speech, despite being very shy. I've not given it too much thought yet as we're at the very beginning of planning.

I'd have to go first and I'd like to say some thank yous to those who helped us (me) most in the planning and to say something nice about the OH.

In the past I've seen mother of the bride and father of the groom do speeches (sadly the brides father had passed when she was younger). I've also seen a bridesmaid and an usher / grooms brother (because the best man refused to do one) do a speech.

Never seen a bride do a speech though.

Sorry I should of added a ? as it was ment as a joke, being that all the things the goom says has been written and ok'd by the bride. Somtimes as a joke the groom will say lots of beautiful things about the bride and then turn to her and ask "what does this say as I cant read your writing"

My son (giver-awayer) shared his speech with us, but myself and my husband each kept ours a secret from each other and everyone. It was another thing to look forward to during the day, another surprise and another heart-swelling moment to add to the others. I recommend it Smiley smile

? Guy you are too smooth!

    Love it.

I haven't planned a speech- I talk A LOT all the time so I will be making a conscious effort to let everyone else get a word in for a change!
