Bridesmaid dress headache - Please please help if you can!

Miss Twizz, 23 April, 2013 at 22:15 Posted on Planning 0 17

Hello ladies! After a recent wobble about my colour scheme because I thought finding things in my colours would be difficult, I eventually decided to stick to my guns and go with the colours I loved and had imagined having since the word go. I am indeed running up against a couple of the problems I was worried about - The biggie being bridesmaid’s dress!

We are looking for a deep red floor length dress, because of my bridesmaid’s shape we would like chiffon or similar, more floaty than fitted satin and must must must have straps. I can’t find anything ANYWHERE ? the vast majority are strapless which is a huge no no or just not available in my colour.

I’m not sure if it’s down to the simple fact I just don’t know where to look but I am really struggling and would greatly appreciate any help and even any ideas where I could look. I'm starting to get quite stressed that I'll not be able to find anything for her and I so want her to have a lovely dress she's comfortable in for my day!

We really like the style of the BHS dress below but sadly it’s too dark – we’re looking for the deep red of the other dresses, not as deeper burgundy as this one: (there is more of a difference in colours than shown in pics, we have swatches and seen the BHS dress in the shop & it is really quite dark)

We also like the style of these Dressy dresses and the colour is perfect but the Dressy range is just too pricey for our budget.....

Have you tried lightinthebox.com? I must admit i havent ordered anything myself but i have spent a long time looking at BM dresses on there. All the reviews on the site seem glowing but may be worth asking around on here or googling a bit more.

They do have a huge choice though and you can order swatches for colour/fabric etc.

Depending how long you have before you need the dresses, this kind of colour might be easier to pick up on the high street when the autumn/winter ranges are in store. These usually start filtering in around August/September time.

Thanks Dr Buffles, I'll have a look and see if I can find out more about that site!

Icklefee - I get married on 22nd Feb 2014...... I had wondered that it might be easier when more "wintery" stuff is in shops but I also don't want to risk leaving it TOO late in case we have to try ordering something from overseas - I think I would need plenty of contingency time for that! There does seem to be a selection in my colour around, just unfortunately the vast majority are strapless and or slinky satin etc... ?

I cant really tell if this is more a purply colour, but found this on sale for £90. Otherwise TK Maxx might have some stock from the autum/winter season. You dresses look like a 'wine' colour.

A dressmaker might be a cheaper option. Also a lot of Hitvhed brides used this UK ebay seller last summer, don't know if anyone still is https://stores.ebay.co.uk/huiyunkitty?_trksid=p2047675.l2563

Have a look on ebay and preloved for the Dessy dresses. Also Alfred Angelo 7016 is very similar to the strappy Dessy one but with a halter strap, it's a popular style and come up on ebay quite frequently. Once you know the style number, size and colour you want (maybe go round some shops and have a look) it's not too hard to find a second hand dress or a shop sample and I know the Alfred Angelo ones are a really good quality flattering dress because I've got one!

If it helps, I just ordered 6 dresses from Lightinthebox.com .. They are the (all custom) sizes we ordered, they fit well (and those are more fitted in design that you are looking for). They have a good range of colours. They do dresses with sleeves, big bonus. And you can look at them by neckline/ shape. Which makes it easy to look for a style to suit/ feel comfortable wearing.

Another vote for lightinthebox make sure you measure your bridesmaids Mine told me she was a 26 turns out she is a 30!! One is a size 10 so I have gone for two different style dresses in the same colour which is lovely! The dresses are really well made - one thing though remember to take into account customs charges - I was caught out here!

Have them made. You can choose the exact colour you want then! It's usually cheaper too. Mine are working out at £75 which I think is a bargain for a made to measure dress.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but are the customs charges 20%? As in VAT?

These are beautiful dresses. I purchased nine dresses from www.justthebeginnings.com. I had trouble finding the right color shade too but they are very helpful and have many colors to choose from and my dresses were only 79.00.

It's probably changed since I last got married in 2005 but back then it was 24% import duty, then VAT (20%) on top of the price+duty amount.
