Bridesmaid's dress - uh oh!

judeclarke, 15 May, 2011 at 18:39 Posted on Planning 0 9

We took my girlie BM to Bluewater today to look at dresses. She had her heart set on a tea length dress, fitted to the waist with a full skirt - very 50s style.

We tried on dozens in John Lewis, HoF and various 'fashion' stores before we ended up in Oriental Pearl she tried on a couple before my mum persuaded her to try a full length dress on. She resisted, but tried it anyway - and loved it! Of course now she has her heart set on exactly the dress she tried on - full length, strapless (which I said she couldn't have because she's too young and doesn't have enough boob to put in it) with a chiffon overskirt. It was gorgeous though.

The dress itself is nearly £200, so I had to carefully explain to her that it was WAAAAAAY above the budget and we'd see if our dressmaker could make something similar, so I've just spent the last hour trying to fins a pattern.

So they dress she loved is:

and the pattern I have found is:

Do you think it will work if we make the dress full length and add a chiffon layer? (It will be silver with a red sash)

And is that style reasonable for a 13 year old who is a size 8 with A-cup boobs?

I like it. If your worried about your younger BM not filling it in the boobie area why not get your dress maker to add straps? x

Or could the dressmaker put some elastice in the top so it stays up? If I was 13 i'd probably prefer straps because I'd be mortified if my boobs popped out.

I think it's a really nice dress and agree with maybe getting them to add straps. Can I ask who your dressmaker is (I'm thinking of using one). Are you going to buy material?

What about de-tachable straps? That way she can decide. I have A-cup boobs myself and strapless in general is a no-go area.

Thanks for your input ladies. I'll look at sraps with her.

I have a friend's mum doing the dress and waistcoats for the boys - I'm buying the material.

Aw I think it's so nice you are going to so much trouble to accommodate her! I think the dress would be fine on a teenager...I do know what you mean about it being a bit grown up, but if she is comfortable in it and it is made to fit her, then it will look beauiful.

In terms of the pattern, I have never made anything in my life that I could wear (I don't think slashing a pair of jeans so that I could look like Brenda from 90210 when I was 13 counts) but I would say just take the picture of the original yellow dress in to your dressmaker and see if she can do it from that - or if she has a pattern herself that she could adapt.

I'm a size 8 and an A cup and without sounding cocky, strapless looks great on me!! Maybe add starps because of her age but if shes comfortable then I wouldn't bother, shes a teenager, not a child.

See, you say that but I think it must be an individual thing. I've worn that style strapless dress/top before and on both occasions (one when I was size 8 and one size 10) although it looked good, i had to keep pulling it up as it kept trying to flash my bra/boobs! Not a good look! it's made me paranoid about wearing strapless things now.

Admittedly I did have a strapless two piece dress when I was a BM and because it was a fitted corset, it didn't budge

When i first got married I had 2 adult BMs and and a 13 yr old. She had exactly the same dress as the older BM's and she looked lovely....not too grown up but not like a little girl. They wore full length satin dresses. So the jist is I'm sure she will look fine and it not be too old for her. Ask her if she wants straps and see what she says.

And I know what you mean about oriental pearl......price of their dresses are extortionate! (although its where my wedding dress is from and I only paid £500 for so not so bad for a brides dress!)
