Bridesmaids dresses

2b_MrsB, 25 September, 2012 at 19:31 Posted on Planning 0 4

Hi everyone.

Are any of you having your bridesmaids dresses made by a dressmaker ????

If so please can you tell me how this works

Do they work from a pattern ? who provides it ?

Do you source the material etc yourself or do they help you with it ?

How long does the process take?

Also how much is it cost approximately ? (I appreciate this will vary from area to area and be dependant on how much detail there is on the dress etc)

I'd be grateful for any advice ?

Many thanks

    Hiya

Mine are being made by a friend who is a dress maker so she's not charging me!

I got a pattern from a local shop bout £7, but beware the sizes are a bit random, my bridesmaid who is a size 10/12 has come up as an 18 on the pattern!

I got my dressmaker to measure the girls and she worked out how much material I needed, I sourced this online and found duchess satin a third of the price in the shops. I had to get the satin, lining material, boning, zips and cotton.

I know I didn't have to pay for the work to be done but all in all, pattern, material etc for 4 dresses for girls ranging between a 10 and a 26 £100!! I'd call that a bargain!

    Hi Sparklebright.

    Thanks for replying.

I'd have no idea where to source all these items or how to tell if it was of a good quality. ☹️

Don't worry, I am totally clueless about dress making! I put it off as long as I could to sort.

Apparently duchess satin is the best you can buy and my dress maker says it's the best quality stuff she's ever worked with. I think I got that on the calico lane website (just goggle them) it came within 48 hours on a great big roll, very impressed!

The dressmaker told me EXACTLY what to get, what length zips, what size boning and I literally just banged that into ebay and google.

Your local fabric shop should have patterns, let me see if i can find a link to the one i'm using

Our bridesmaids will only be 14 yrs old ( adult size 10) and 8 (but think 5 yr old child size wise ) but they want at least similar dresses which is proving to be the problem.

Think it might be best if I speak to a dressmaker for advice.

Thanks for advice on the process anyway ?
