Bridesmaids in black?

kizzi10000, 21 February, 2016 at 17:23 Posted on Planning 0 19

Trying to find a dress for my daughter and her cousin to wear. Don't want anything fancy, it's a register office ceremony and I want the girls to be able to wear them afterwards. Not even sure I'm that fussed about having bridesmaids either, especially as the daughter doesn't seem bothered if she's one or not, and my sister's daughter has been bridesmaid before...

Anyhoo, said daughter has found an above the knee fitted black dress in New Look for a good price that she would be happy to wear (everything I've suggested has been met with a 'it's ok I suppose' at best), but not sure black was quite the colour I was going for lol. Not got a colour scheme, and the OH has long realised he's not got a hope in hell of getting the girl in the mint green he was thinking of lol, so black is as good as any other colour.

Has anyone else had bridesmaids in black? And did you get any sort of reaction from guests?

I don't see why not. If it's lovely and suits her then go for it!

I was a bridesmaid in my cousin's wedding and we all wore black dresses. It was great because we were able to pick whatever dress we wanted and wear it to other events than just the wedding. I wouldn't worry about anyone having poor reactions to black dresses. I don't think guests care much about those things. However, her wedding was in the autumn so the black fit the rest of her colour scheme, which was mostly oranges, reds and yellows.

I agree with all above. Black is becoming very popular for bridesmaids now, and it looks very chic.

    Thanks everyone ?

Daughter found a couple of dresses, straight, above the knee, bit of lace on the top, one with a peplum, one without, so I showed my sis (her daughter is bridesmaid too), and all I got was a 'blimey, they're a bit grown up aren't they?!' The girls will be not much off 15 when we get married, though mine has always seemed older than her cousin, and she bought herself a similar dress recently for a party....

I'll keep looking, but now I don't know if people will thing they look too old/tarty/inappropriate ☹️

I think black dresses for bridesmaids can look fab!

When I was younger and engaged I was going for a black and white theme and would have had them in black. I have also seen black but with a really striking colour alongside, like bright orange. Looked fabulous!

If your sister isn't keen on her daughter wearing black How about looking for a dress that comes in another colour option. Let your daughter wear black and niece wear a different colour in same dress.

Or add a coloured sash and shoes to the black.

I'm not sure it was the colour, but the whole look. Which if they were going out I might agree with lol, but it's a special occasion.

    Daughter has found these:

Personally, I think black is a very sophisticated and classy colour. I'd have been in black as a bridesmaid a few years back if the couple hadn't split... but that's a different story.

Of the two dresses you posted, I think the one on right (with beige background) is nicer, although maybe a little short for 15 year olds? Unless you get the 'tall version' and it falls below their knees?!

Maybe go out the the shop and try them on all together - the mum can see what the dress looks like first hand and you can see if you like them as well!

I had bridesmaids in black. No one was really bothered about them being in black. The main thing was people worried about wearing black themselves knowing the bridesmaid were in it (people wanted to wear a LBD!)

Heres a flash of me and them! ?

    Hope it helps

Love Lui picture and maybe it's the sort of style your sister would be happy for her daughter to wear? Your daughter may like it and if not I don't think it's essential they wear the same black dress.

Lovely picture Lui! Girls look great ? and I love that style. Unfortunately the daughter doesn't ☹️

We'e having a pretty relaxed day, no colour csheme to match things to etc, but it would be nice if I can get the girls matching dresses as there's just the 2 of them

    Hi

my maids were going to be on black until I went and brought my black dress! They will be in grey now with black accessories. I've seen lots of pics of black maids dresses and I think it's a very classy look, and also something the maids could wear again after so good value for money :-)

LOVE the idea of getting married in black ?. I wanted red. Bright red. My first dress was dark blue (but was too long in the body for my short-arse 5ft 2). The next was a burgundy evening gown bought from a friend. But then I wanted to play dress-up at a bridal shop and just see what it felt like to wear a 'proper' wedding dress (I made my first one), and found and ivory one I didn't want take off lol.

Glad you found the one :-) The thought of going in white / ivory terrifies me but I love the trad wedding dress, it makes every bride beautiful. The colours just aren't for me and don't suit my gothic nature. My mum was devo'd at first but come round to the idea now she can help source the accessories. Just been having another search for black bridesmaids dresses and love the look :-)

It's good to be different sometimes ?

If I had the money, figure and height, I would be walking up the aisle in this:
