Broken tooth on a child.

fiorelli, 27 November, 2008 at 15:26 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

Does anyone here have any experience of a child with a (front top) broken tooth?

I had a call to pick up my 8 yr old from school at lunchtime. He got pushed over and now is over half a tooth missing with two fat lips and a graze just below his nose.

Just got back from the dentist who done a brilliant job of filling the gap of his tooth to match the one next to it - it looks just like his 'real' tooth. we were warned that he may need it replaced several times until he is 16 at which time he can have it capped. But I forgot to ask how strong the actual filling is - i.e. what things can he eat, what things can he eat with care and what things can't he eat. Does anyone here have any idea? Thanks.

This happened to my 11 year old daughter last year. She was pushed against a wall and broke the front tooth and chipped 3 others. She has it stuck back on at the time but since then it fell off and we lost it. Like your son they replaced it and that has also fallen out and been replaced. We are under teh care of Birmingham dental hospital who give her regular check ups. They have done some treatment to check wether the actual root was damaged. She had a mouth guard that she wore when doing sports. Its been quite a while since it last fell off so touch wood its ok. As for eating we weren't really given any advice. She hasn't really had any problems with eating. I would just be wary of when he is playing sports etc.

Well it seems times have changed since I was a child. I chipped my front tooth when I was 7 and the dentist wouldn't do anything at all until I was 14. I had to walk round with half a front tooth for 7 years.

I did get it capped when I was 14 - but was able to eat as normal and wasn't advised to avoid anything. It lasted until earlier this year so [quick maths] 11 years, when it came off while I was eating a salad sandwich of all things!

I've had it redone and again, not advised to avoid anything......

I assume the material used on a child would be the same as for an adult and the only reason that it might not last as long is due to growing?

Thanks for replying both. He is just under the care of our registered dentist. He did say that the filling may not be that strong, and we are due to go back on 15th for them to review it. If it has come off then, I don't know what they will do. He mentioned root canal treatment - inasmuch as he thinks he doesn't need it at the minute. I have advised him it probably isn't best if he bites into an apple just yet and if he wants one to get it cut up first, but other than that I think I will need to let him get on with it. It's good to hear others' experiences of this though. thanks.

Dazzaln73, I'm not sure about the material. but the tooth is an adult one, so don't know about the not lasting that long being due to that.

Another one who went through all of this when I was 11.5. The tooth that cracked isn't the one with the most major damage - that was the one next to it which I ended up having removed when I was about 21 / 22. I've had problems with both teeth on and off but the one with the chip - lost it once when I was 12 or 13 in school pe and then again earlier this year when I ate some really cold hard chocolate.

I smashed both my top front teeth when my sister pushed me into the bath when I was 9 - Thanks sis ?

They were capped within days and are still there 29 years later. I had a small chip about 15 years ago, which they patched up, but they have been very strong, and still are. Unfortunately 20 years of coffee and red wine have taken their toll, and they aren't the prettiest teeth going, so I am considering crowns in the future.
