    Hiya,

ours is 3 tiers in the shape of a birdcage (top tier is gluten free vanilla sponge with jam, middle tier is chocolate fudge, and bottom tier is lemon drizzle) and we are paying £275. That seemed like a really good deal though as most places cost a fair bit more than that from what I saw.

    Em :-)

I wanted mini cakes for everyone rather then one big one. I e-mailed as many cake places as I could and the prices varied from £2.50 each up to £6 each and a one tier cake cost from £50 up to £100!

It really depends on who you choose - I can only recommend getting as many quotes as possible.

The lady I chose in the end is cheaper because she doesn't have a shop (runs her business from home) and she isn't a 'big name' business.

Mine isnt an expensive one - I understand it won't look like a Chockywokkydodah cake but it is costing £150 for a cake to feed 100 people 4 tier to resemble a birdcage...

You can spend anything from £10-£1000! Depends on what you want, how many you are feeding & where you are based.

The M&S ones are very good & look fab.http://www.marksandspencer.com/Wedding-Cakes-Food-To-Order-Food-Wine/b/72561031

Asda make plain, iced cakes in various sizes. You can add ribbon/glitter/flowers/bows/butterflies /toppers etc in your theme & colours. Either put together with wooden dowels with cakes on top of each other, or hire a cake stand to sit each tier on. Very easy & not expensive. Cake stands are about £15 to hire.

We have gone RIDICULOUSLY over the top on the cakeage...we're having a 3 tiered cake with loads of sugarwork and buttercream and handmade cake toppers and it's going to look a bit like THIS:

    and THIS....

..and I'm so excited I can't breathe!! Stuff the dress!!

We're spending £450 on our cake. I know that this is ridiculous, but- my God- we REALLY LOVE CAKE.

Going to pick up some sample cupcakes this Saturday so we can decide which flavours we want.

We're only having 45 guests!! (ridiculous)

It's another one of those how long is a piece of string questions. A bit like asking how much you spent on your dress. You can get a friend to do it for nothing, go middle range and get a supermarket cake, or go to a professional and have something made for you. You can then choose how experienced/respected/talented the cakemaker is and their price will reflect this. The level of detailing, size/shape of cake, flavours etc will all go into making the quote. If they have to spend longer making it, it will cost you more!

All I will say if you choose someone who has a home business or is doing it as a favour is to check they hold the relevant food hygiene and public liability insurance, at the end of the day this is a food product that you're feeding people so not worth scrimping on safety.

Well we were lucky as a friend made our cake, bottom tier fruit, 2 others were sponge, and only charged us £100.

Hi :0) after changing my mind several times, I have finally plumped for this (with a couple of minor tweaks). My sister is making it as a wedding present.... All deep layers of lemon madeira, probably with a white chocolate ganache under the fondant. 10", 2x8", 6",4"...... If she were charging, it would be around the 300 mark I think. It's to feed about 100ppl.... May be a little generous on portion sizes tho cos I loooooove cake!!! Best thing to do is take a look at various suppliers prices for something you fancy. Make sure you get an actual taster from them tho.... I know a few independent cakers whose cakes look fabbut taste shocking. I wouldn't even rely solely on personal recommendation... Always best to check these things directly cos whatever you pay, it's a chunk of money you don't want to feel you have been disappointed in spending. Happy cake searching!! Xx

Mine was an M&S cake... About £90 I think (they often do 3 for 2 on the individual tiers).

    It's just cake.

M&S for us, too. Purple flowers two-tier fruit cake for £75 (says it serves 90, but I'm being cautious), plus vanilla and chocolate sponge cutting bars hidden away in the kitchen. Three types of cake for about 140 people, for about £100! Smiley smile

We are getting a 3 tier sponge cake that feeds up to 100 people from Waitrose for £145.00 (a friend is a manager there and gets 20% off too!) but we are having a further 50 people for the evening, so have decided to do a table of cookie jars, all different flavours and dietary requirements (I will make these myself).

    xx
