Buttonholes/ Corsages

Sparklebright, 28 July, 2012 at 22:41 Posted on Planning 0 4

Hiya

My Mum bless her heart is in full wedding planning mode! Today she asked whether or not we are buying button holes for all our guests, as apparently even a few years ago this was the done thing!!!! My answer was.. uh.. no!

She's now saying that we should get them for family only but where do you draw the line!

What are others doing? xx

Bridal party only for me. I think bridal party only is pretty much the done thing now, other than really small weddings.

Unless you have plenty of money to throw at this I would leave it and just explain the tight budget to your mum. Even if I had the money I don't think I would want everyone having them anyway. To me it's something special for the special people we picked to have a role on our day x

We're getting them for groom, best man, ushers, parents, grandparents, siblings and their partners and my friend who is doing a reading for us. So basically the people we class as the wedding party...

We are getting 4 button holes for the groom, grooms son, best man and my brother who is giving me away.

I think years ago everyone was supplied with one but times change I would just get what you can afford or just the bridal party.

It's a questions that gets asked quite often and does cause confusion sometimes but basically the buttonholes are provided for the principal bridal party only i.e., Groom, Best Man, FOB, FOG, and any ushers if you are having them. The Groom usually has one a bit more special than the rest of the men so he stands out on the photos as being the Groom. Mums have corsages which are larger than buttonholes and resemble a miniature bouquet that they can wear on their outfit, on their wrist, on their handbag or on their hat. I always advise couples not to purchase buttonholes for everyone as they tend to get wasted because a lot of people don't like wearing buttonholes especially men! Women who are attending as a guest generally prefer to buy a buttonhole (if they want one that is) that would match their outfit rather than being given one chosen for them. There are lots of examples of the different types of buttonholes and corsages on my website for some ideas.

There i s a lot of contention about whether Mums corsages should match the bridal party colours or whether they should match their outfits. As far as floristry etiquette goes, they should be made to match/compliment their outfit rather than the wedding colours but this is up to the individuals concerned. Hope that helps!
