Buying a Dress online?

ch4r1ie, 5 November, 2009 at 13:18 Posted on Planning 0 8

Hi ladies, I'm new here, although I've been engaged since March 08. I am seriously considering buying a dress from a company in China (won't say who because not sure if allowed on this forum). My question is, have any of you bought a dress from the internet (namely China), and if so, what was your experience? Was the dress good quality? Like in the picture? Thanks in advance for any replies. xxxx

    Hey, Welcome to Hitched!

A lot of people have been praising lightinthebox.com I know laineywhu got some gorgeous BM dresses from there! I think Milly Bridal and Landy Bridal are the two biggies over there!

Tell us more about your plans....

Not bought it yet but I plan too!

I'm looking at Landy Bridal for mine based on reviews.

From what I can tell, some people love them, some not so much. Sometimes the fabrics aren't the same as the designers use, sometimes it seems the stitching isn't perfect...

For me, it's all about cost. I can't personally justify buying something over £800 for one day - the dress i liked is £897 - that's over £100 per hour for the day's wear! I'm not worried about the fabric - and the seems - no one sees but me. I'm willing to take a chance as either way - I won't be buying from a bridal shop.

Hi Charlie, I bought a dress from China (via a shop on eBay). The material, size & quality were all perfect but there was one major issue which meant I couldn't use the dress (or the replacement they sent!).

It cost me £90 (inc. postage). It was a white, beaded & heavily embroidered dress with what was meant to be a dark purple sash (kind of Cadbury's chocolate purple ?) just under the bust. The first dress arrived & the sash was London bus red! I argued with them that it's definitely not purple. I eventually got another dress (paid them £10 postage) & the sash was salmon pink.

Just be aware of the language barrier issues!

With buying dresses overseas there will always be good and bad stories.

It might be worth a look over on the 'For Sale' board because I've seen some new dresses being sold for really good prices on there.

I couldn't justify the cost either so I hired my dress. but i wore a colour so was able to hire what was basically a ball dress. There are wedding hire places though and some of them will even do slight alterations so it fits you better.

Thanks ladies! If I'm honest, I have been a bit of an idiot! I originally bought my dress from a Bridal Shop back in June. I fell inlove with it there and then and just bought it outright (£999), and took it home that day. However, I think I rushed into it too fast, as I have since fallen inlove with a different style of dress. Hence wanting a cheap option from China, just hope the quality is as good. The dress I like is totally different from the dress I have upstairs. They are both beautiful, but the one I already have doesn't seem "princessy" enough for me if that makes sense? So now, I have definately decided to get a different one, even though it's going to break me financially! Because what's the point in me making sure everything on my day is "perfect", if I'm going to be unhappy about the most important bit of all - my dress? By the way, it is Milly Bridal that I'm looking at! ?

Anyway, we are getting married in our local Catholic Church on 10th July. My sister is Maid of Honour/Chief Bridesmaid, and I have 3 younger Bridesmaids also. We have booked the reception venue, it's a gorgeous modern hotel. We've booked two white licoln stretch limo's to transport all the key people, have booked a DJ and flowers, and booked our cake and just about everything else! Have done a mock up of all our Stationary, have all the materials to make it, just need to perfect it now! Our colour scheme is Ivory and Teal (due to MOH dress being Alfred Angelo's Teal). And now that I've gabbled on about me, I will shut up for a while :0) xxx

You should sell the dress you are not going to wear on hitched and then you'll have more money for a new one!

Would do but not sure anyone would be interested. It's a beautiful dress, it really is. I'm tempted to hold onto it until I have the new dress, just incase, but I know I wont be happy wearing it on the day whatever happens now. ? I may list it for sale just to see what happens. I'm a bit gutted that I spent near enough a grand on a dress that I wont be wearing though. I should've taken time to think about it....
