Buying a second dress?

tinker01, 2 February, 2012 at 21:30 Posted on Planning 0 17

I know this has been mentioned dozens of times before but i am having major dress wobbles. I don't hate my dress but it doesn't feel like 'the one'. I didn't try many dress on before deciding on the dress and now i'm thinking maybe i shouldn't have been so hasty. It's being altered at the moment and i'm hoping that will make it look better on me. I'm just scared that if it doesn't feel right when i try it again my OH will go mental!!

What doesn't help is that i can't really find any pictures of it on the internet and the one that i can find, it looks horrible on the model!

Has anyone else changed their dress after buying one already?

Me! I got very caught up in the whole 'moment' of buying a lovely dress, which just isnt me.The more I thought about my style of wedding, venue etc, I decided to find another one. Second dress has been ordered and firsr dress is being sold.

Can you ask the shop if they'll transfer your deposit to another dress?

I think if you really don't like it then and vcan afford to loose some money and sell it on then you should - you only get to do it once! but I'd get them not to alter it until you are sure - once its altered to fit you I'd imagine you will get less for it if you try and resell.

Or is it just that is doesn't fit perfectly at the moment? The alterations can make a world of difference to that!

Can you post the picture and say what particular things you don't like, I'm sure people on here might be able to suggest ways you could alter it without resorting to a new frock!

Oh my gosh, I feel almost the same, I bought my dress about a year ago, and bought it because I liked it (i also liked another, but as they were in diff shops, I felt I liked this one more). well for the past 6 months I've been sure I've made a mistake. Its hung up at a relatives house, so I've been back to put it on again, and just feel "it's a nice dress", not a wow feeling.

I told my OH, he said perhaps its because I bought it so long ago, its lost its wow factor to me. I hope he's right, as I did like it enough to buy it. But I'm nearly that conident that I like the other more (plus its so much more me) that I have ordered a copy version from a china place. I realise the quality may be really shoddy, in which case it'll make me like the other better, which has to be good. But if not I'll be wearing a £46 dress for my wedding.

Wait till you have tried it on again because you may be like many people here and realise that of course you love it. But there options if not. (by the way my OH has no idea about this other dress, as if I do wear it I have to work out what to do with my original!). Could you tell us the name so we can try to find a pic, see what it's like?

Is there anything in particular that you can say you are uncertain about?

I do think its quite a natural thing to go through the wobbles - its a big purchase and almost a one chance thing.... I bought mine Nov 2010 and am going through the alterations now. Its not what i thought I would choose, and I loved most of the dresses I tried, but this was definitely 'the one' at the time, and I have to keep thinking back to that time.

I think the issue now is that everything else is coming together - but I still can't quite see my whole appearance - trying the dress on after work with hair not done etc just doesn't complete the look!

That said, my dress has been quite altered and I still feel happy with it - but then you see other people posting their pics on here and start to wonder, is it right etc.

But (and I think thsi is my point) there is alot which can be tweaked very cheaply on a dress to make it one of a kind and and your dress... if you see what I mean.

Sorry for the bit of a ramble!!

Thanks everyone. I think part of it is (and it sounds ridiculous but...) i have big hips and this dress in my opinion makes them look bigger. I just keep picturing myself in a bigger, more princess-ey dress that hides the hips and makes my waist look smaller haha.

I would definately go and try on more dresses if i wasn't scared of what my OH (and my mum!!!) would say. I didnt pay a fortune for my dress but still feel like iv wasted money.

    I've just done this.

I was given mine by a work colleague. It was her sisters dress and I also got caught up in the moment and loved it at first and while it is a beautiful dress, it doesn't have a train or that 'feel' about it. My mum has bought me another one for the price it would have cost to get the first one dry cleaned but I've been sworn to silence even from all my BM's. Only mum and I know (and now you guys) and it's killing me!!!!

Hope yours starts to feel like 'yours' soon

In regards to making your waist smaller, get it turned into a lace up back (assuming it has some structure and boning ni the bodice) as this will gove you more shape at the waist - and the large hips just make the curvy effect even better IMO ;o)

I don't think my dress is musch bigger cut on the hips and I am one hippy girl, and witht he lace back I have had added the shape is amazing!

Also, depedning in the way the skirt is constructed they maybe able to let it out a little on the hips and add more underskirts to make the skirt more full if you feel it is clinging on the hips too much?

This is the back of the dress. It has a bit of a lace up back. The shop said they are quite quiet at the moment and could get the alterations done fairly quickly. I was going to wait to try it on again as i don't get married until August but maybe i should try it on sooner rather than later just to see what it is like with alterations. At least then if i don't like it i still have time to find a new one.

I see - in whuich case yes, I would wait for the alterations and see how you feel, having it fit properly might make the worl of difference, or at least you can concentrate on what changes might make it perfect rather than the bits that dont fit.

I would say try it on as soon as you can - as you say more time is good if you do decide there is no saving it, and also if you decide its perfect then iots a weight off your mind, and if you decide there are more alterations then it gives time for that too.

When you try it on, be honest with the people in the shop about what you don't like, and ask them about what they suggest about it - this won't be an unusual situation for them, and they and the seamstress will have a lot of tricks up their sleeves!

Also, I have just noticed that the site you got the picture from is a place that does copies of dresses... so it might not be a picture of the real thing hance you feeling its a bad picture....

What is the name of the dress?

It doesn't matter if it has been mentioned before, it's really hard to find the topic you want to discuss on around here. So, getting back to your problem I would also recommend you to buy two dresses!

This is the only other picture on the internet. I think the dress is called Gunila but that's only because it says it on this website.

I have 2 dresses, the first i fell in love with as soon as i saw it, literally the day after OH proposed last year but is from ebay and was actually in worse condition than i originally realised, but fixable, the second is brand new and totally different in design and material and is really lovely, and i really like it, but its not the first. I keep swapping from one to the other! Which is really silly as one is white, the other ivory, so now i have 2 veils as well.... I'm probably spending more money than i need to and getting myself in a twist!

So now i'm thinking..... do i even really like any of the dresses..... maybe i need a 3rd?.... ?

Sorry, i'm really no help to you. but if you're not 100% sure, then maybe you should ask the dress shop to put a hold on the dress, go back as many times as you need to and try on as many as you like. I'm sure its not the first time someone has changed their mind at the shop, they are probably used to it.

    xx

    Hey,

I was having major dress wobbles this week, I loved it when I tried it on originally, and when I went back to re-try it on in November I loved it again. However, it was a bit too small for me (I got it in the sale) and I was thinking about trying other ones on to see if I really liked it or not. When I tried it on again yesterday I looked much better in it as I have lost a bit of weight. I put a tiara (which I brought) and a veil on but there was still 'something' missing. My mum suggested putting a hoop underneath it, which myself and the woman in the shop did not think would make any difference. However, as soon as the hoop was underneath I knew that was it! It made such a big difference to the shape of the dress at the front, it meant that I wasn't kicking the dress out when I walked and I loved it.

I now know that it is the dress for me, as everytime i look at the photo I think "WOW". I would say wait until you have had the alterations done, and see if you still like it or not. If you don't get the wow feeling then look at other dresses, and this will confirm whether or not your dress is the one or not. Good luck in whatever you choose :-) x
