buying fabric for BM dresses

DavinaDM, 15 March, 2014 at 18:42 Posted on Planning 0 6

Hi all Smiley smile I'm having my BM dresses made as they're all going to be different but in the same colour (dark grey)

Has anyone else bought the fabric online and where did you get it from for a reasonable price?? Any recommendations please? I've done the typical Google search and all seem to be very expensive. I'm looking for chiffon and satin,

Thank you!!

Where are you based? I buy loadsof fabric so may be able to recommend somewhere.

It would be a good idea if you can order swatches first so you are certain of the colour?

I've had a quick look but I can't find anything. Finding the satin is ok, the chiffon is the hard bit. I'm guessing you want the chiffon and the satin to match?

To be honest £5 is very cheap for satin. I would say you would need to spend around £8 per m to get something that didn't look cheap and shiny. What type of weight are you looking at? Can you flash a picture of the shapes of dresses? Are they slinky or more structured?

Do you have any fabric shops in you area? That's where I would recommend going - you may be able to barter a bit based on the quantity.

If not what about trying Dessy or Pretty maids as they do most of their dresses in the same colour but you can choose different shapes.

    edit:

This is the website of a guy I use. He has a stall in Leeds market which is how I know him but he recently bought this place near York. He's really good and if you call and tell him what you need he could send you swatches. He can get hold of most things. It's nice fabric though so be prepared to spend more than £5 a metre.

Thanks for the link I'll check that out now! Dessy is lovely, dresses are so gorgeous but so expensive so I'm getting someone I know to make them as she's a dress maker (mates rates Smiley smile) the dresses are all different but 2 are long and 2 are short, have attached some flashes but none of them are slinky at all, they all hang beautifully....

Maybe i need to prepare to pay slightly more for the right fabric as you say!
