Buying without trying?

Steelgoddess, 16 December, 2009 at 10:58 Posted on Planning 0 12

Did anyone buy their dress without trying it on?

And if so how did you know it was the one?

Did it look and feel as you hoped?

(I sound like a journalist, but no its just for me lol!)

Are you thinking of buying from a UK bridal shop with out seeing or somewhere online from another country?

I bought a dress from bay of e, it was a lovely dress, but not an exact copy of the dress it was meant to be and the quality was so different, the stitching was obvious, and the bones in the corset werent quite right, it was just little things like instead of crystals pearls and diamond like you get on a dress in a shop it was sequins. I wouldnt recommend it but there are mixed thoughts to it on here, there are a couple of people who had a bad experience like me and others who love there dresses.

Yes, don't do it! I also bought off the bay of e but my luck was a bit better then Moyas, the dress itself was exactly what I'd ordered and was perfect condition. The only problem was when I tried it on. It was everythinkg I thought I wanted wight up until that point! It just didn't really suit me and I felt really uncomfortable and blobby in it!! I've now ordered another dress that was the opposite of what I had in my head (for a start it's strapless and I always said I wanted straps) but it's perfect!

If you're thinking of buying off the internet try some on in bridal shops first!

Funnily enough I was exactly the same - I'm not mad on the tops of my arms into my chest (if that makes sense!) and thought I'd look better with straps, but the one I've got doesn't have and makes that area look slimmer. Personally I'd never buy one off ebay - but then I hardly ever order ANY clothes online. I guess I'd just say if you were going to do it, a) make sure you've done a trying-on session so you know exactly what you want and b) check returns policy.

And thats not always correct! My dress had a stain on it when it arrived so they said to send it back and they would refund it, I paid £29 to send it back to china and Ive heard nothing from them since!! And because it takes like 6 weeks for the dress to arrive by the time it does your out of any ebay/paypal gaurutee and you cant raise a dispute, the best advice they could offer was to speak to the police and they cant do anything. So it was quite an expensive mistake, no dress and no money.

geez Moya, that's awful. Ebay stresses me out with their guarantees and disputes and all that. I'd also advise anyone thinking of ordering online to do a google of the name and reviews, see what comes up - I did this with a site for bm dresses and it put me right off!

I've ordered my dress off Ebay - being made as we speak and expected to be dispatched first week of January...

I went to bridal shops and tried a lot on to work out what I wanted. Luckily, "the one" is a designer who's dresses they copy so I could order exactly what I wanted.

    Fingers crossed!!

Not buying without trying but found my dress cheaper by searching online. A genuine stockist based in the UK, I checked them out on the designer website, bought my dress £300 cheaper than I had been quoted in the shop I went to!

Definitely try on first - a lot of people end up with a completely different style than the one they would have picked.

I bought my dress from Monsoon but I checked their returns policy before committing. Thankfully, my dress fitted perfectly when I got it.
