Cake bakers....advice please! MaryG if you've not dashed off on honeymoon??

Gurzle, 16 May, 2011 at 19:42 Posted on Planning 0 3

In order to kill some time in a wedding related way, me and the boy have decided to have a bash at making our own wedding cake....I have found this website:

http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/4578/creating-your-wedding-cake?pager.offset=0

with a recipe and directions...but we want a four tier cake, can we just have two tiers of fruit cake at the bottom? I know that if I put too much weight on the bottom layer it may collapse but I thought that fruit cake was pretty good at weight bearing?

If it works, we will have more cake than we know what to do with...

Your right fruit cake is very good for carrying weight. Just don't put fruit cake on top of any other cake otherwise it will collapse.

That's why traditionally wedding cake is always fruit cake, lasts longer and better for weight if you wanted lots of decorations, I've having four tiers, mum's making mine tho, two fruit and top two sponge.

Its all in the doweling rods, these hold the weight of the tier above, if you cut these correctly you can put the Fruit Cake where ever you like, but as its your first time leave it on the bottom! My advice buy more rods than you need to allow for getting it wrong, do a google serach or maybe u tube and i'm sure you will be able to find a demo on how to cut them. Good Luck i'm sure it will be fantastic, even more so because you have made it yourself?

Thank you girls! I think it will be fun no matter what...I always like asking the boy to help me in the kitchen as he gets all serious and panicky and keeps asking me to repeat myself, which just makes me laugh!

I will let you know - and flash the results, no matter what the results!

    WSS about the rods.

I'd also steer clear of using columns as these can be a little tricky to get right. Only at the weekend I was talking with one of my bridesmaids about a wedding cake that did a leaning tower of Pisa act!
