Cake Conundrum

awhitewedding2602, 4 January, 2015 at 11:01 Posted on Planning 0 15

Hello

I'm having a bit of a conundrum. We're getting married December 30th 2015 and whilst our budget isn't tiny it's also not massive and we're trying to keep costs down as much as possible. Our wedding breakfast is going to be an afternoon tea rather than a formal sit down meal which is more suited to our taste and style of our wedding.

The problem is, because there will be loads of cake me and my OH decided not to have a wedding cake because well.. everyone would be caked out and it's just an extra thing to buy and organise, you know?? I wasn't that bothered about the cake cutting tradition and figured it'd be fine.

But. we've mentioned this to a few people and it seems like we're making a mistake. My older sister has offered to pay for her friend to make us just a small cake purely for cutting and another friend has also offered to make us one. I'm still not especially bothered but do you think we're missing out on something if we don't do a cake cutting?

Thank you

Laura

Hello date twin! Personally I don't see the big deal with cake cutting and somehow have been talked into it at our uk party a month after the wedding! Were serving ours as dessert but if we weren't we wouldn't have one either. If you prefer not to have one then don't :-)

I too never wanted a cake but my friend offered to make ours so I went with it, plus it doubles up as an evening snack which saves us a bit of money as our venue food is extortionate!

What about a cheese cake? As in wheels of cheese - it also doubles up as evening food and even a 7 tier is around £250 which is a lot cheaper then the equivalent cake.

I must say I have a really sweet tooth but even I get caked out after afternoon tea! Perhaps if people want to do it for you, just have a small one to cut in the evening. Are you having evening food? I was MOH last week and they had cheese and pate which was perfect, and then a bit of cake after that was just what you needed.

As others have said, there are cake alternatives out there that you could use to replace evening food?

You can pick up cheese ones for around £115 from Waitrose I think and M&S do a 3 tier pork pie cake for £99 or thereabouts.

We're having a cake, but not cutting it. I didn't want a cake at all, by but my OH did ?

"we've mentioned this to a few people and it seems like we're making a mistake."

I TOTALLY understand this! We had decided not to do a cake, (expense, no one would eat it after the big meal, etc) but as soon as I mentioned that, everyone went crazy!! So, we decided to have one, and my work offered to pay as a wedding present! I say if people are offering then take the offer, it will be a lovely personal touch if a friend has made it, and it will be something extra to have as a lovely memento of the day, and treats to eat after the honeymoon (if you're going on one straight after?)

    Notes to add -

Cons - hardly any of our guests had any, (about 70 people) and we had an entire half of 3 tiers to eat after the wedding. (We had the cake cut in half, to save half for ourselves, but there was still SO much left over in the buffet!)

Pros - We got lovely photos of us cutting the cake and laughing hysterically because the knife wouldn't go through the middle tier!

I did go to a wedding once where they served an afternoon tea and they did have a cake cutting as well. I don't remember ever getting a slice of the wedding cake, but there was so much sandwiches and scones/cake I don't think I could have eaten the wedding cake as well.

I don't get the cake cutting thing but I know a lot of people do it. I said I wasn't going to have a formal cake and my mum exclaimed 'but what will you cut!?' And I can't for the life of me work out why I need to have a photo of my cutting a cake.

When do you all serve your cakes? I was planning on having lots of cakes - kind of like an afternoon tea buffet, for dessert in the wedding reception but there would be no cake in the evening. I am ok with this but would like other people's cake opinions? Cake is usually served in the evening but is it odd to eat in earlier in the day as your pudding?

We are not having a cake because we cannot justify spending so much money on just cake

Plus I don't really get the whole cake cutting either, to save comments we just haven't said anything - im sure it wont be missed on the day.

We are however having Krispy Kreme doughnuts to go with our evening buffet which is a fraction of the price and also something a bit different

    Now you're talking!

Personally, I don't think it would be noticed by most if you didn't have one. When shooting weddings, the cake is usually cut just before the first dance. Until it's announced, people have forgotten about it.

Thank you for all your input.

Neither of us are cheese fans (shock horror) so we're not going for a cheese cake (plus, my twin is getting married in Sept and having one.. we're trying to differentiate). There is going to be canapes and then afternoon tea with sandwiches, cake, scones which I think will be really filling!! Perhaps we'll just have a small one to cut purely for photos and then we can scoff it when we're hungover and driving to our honeymoon destination? ;-) Ohhhh. Krispy kremes?? Now I just want a plate of jam doughnuts!!!

We're having savoury snacks in the evening: mini fish and chips, bacon butties.. I'm a savoury girl really!!!

Thank you all again, will keep you posted!!

    Hi.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this... but, I had the same thought - no cake, and yes people said you must (all the reasons mentioned before plus I dont really like cake).

Anyway I went to see a cake lady to order a 1 teir cake, just to so we can cut it and she came up with what I thought was a great idea.

I have now ordered a 3 teir cake, but only the top teir (the smallest bit) is cake - this will be more than enought to feed daytime guests if they want cake (we only have 40). the other 2 larger layers are fake!

This cut the price more than in half, we dont end up with loads of unwanted cake and we get to cut the top teir - so everyones happy. (Also the cake lady said if we wanted to keep the fake cake it will keep - dont think I will tho!)

    Just an idea!
