Cake Flash Please...

woo-woo, 13 October, 2009 at 14:29 Posted on Planning 0 42

Inspired by Gillsy's cake thread!

I paid a deposit for our cake at a wedding fayre as they were doing 10% off and free delivery to venue, but haven't actually picked a cake yet.

It really depends on OH's kilt and colour scheme so just looking for some inspiration at the moment so would love to see some of your cakes please.

Totally pointless post but... I don't like cake, so i wont be spending hundreds of pounds on one. I do however like chocolate so i shall be having a yummy yummy choccie fountain. I might buy a cheap cake from M & S or something so we have something to cut, but I think cake is yukky yukky yuk!

I do love some of the designs tho.... but theyre soooo expensive.

    Do you like cheese moonie?

I've seen a few cheese cakes, different size rounds of cheese tiered, that would give you something to cut and maybe venue could give each table a cheese board afterwards?

    Just a random suggestion lol.

Yes I did suggest this to Oh as I LOVE cheese (possibly the reason for my jelly belly) but OH looked at me as if I was mentally disturbed. He loves his cake maybe more than he loves me, so he definitely wants a cake. Which is ok, I just won't be spending hundreds on something I won't eat.

Thanks for the idea tho, it's a shame I have such a plain OH !! would make a great picture cutting the cheddar and all saying .....CHEESE ?

Hi, I don't have a picture of mine but just on the subject, thought I'd mention how I've saved money on this! I found a pic of a cake I really liked (ivory, 4 tier with gold ribbons and a sparkly brooch) but unfortunately it was from a very expensive cake shop! I took the picture to a few cake shops and they all quoted around £500 (the expensive shop was just under £700!). Anyway, when I looked online, there were a couple of people locally who worked from home making wedding cakes and I found a lovely lady who is doing it for £250 including delivery to the venue! I am so pleased! I've seen pics online of loads of other's she's done so I could see her work beforehand.

We're having a suitcases cake as inspired by this design. Ours will also be white/silver with a little me and OH on top. I didn't want a traditional cake, but the miniature ones but when I saw the suitcases I came round to the idea.

I loved the simplicity of our cake. We had an extra tier just for cutting so had fruit, chocolate and sponge. It made it cheaper as well only having 2 tiers on the actual cake and an extra kept in the kitchen to be cut up.

Not got a pic of mine as our Mams are making it. My Mam is doing the bottom fruit cake and his Mam is doing the top 2 sponge cakes plus the decorating.

I'm want a 3 tier stacked cake - plain white icing with just coloured ribbon round each layer and maybe some flowers positioned on it somehow. Still trying to find a picture of something I'm after as inspiration!

Flowers on cakes are becoming really popular again. We've done some where there are lots of flowers between the tiers, others where the tiers are stacked with a little posy on the top. Some pics below for inspiration!

Thank you ladies for the snaps, they are all fab.

I seem to be favouring more minimalistic cakes like PG's, so now I know what direction I'm headed atleast!

This was are cake, I did not want fuss with the cake. I wanted it nice and simple, saw this design in a cake shop which was charging us around £450. A friend of a friend made it for £230 inc a cut up sponge for the kitchen.

I really like that aswell Fiona and you got it for a good price.

I seriously am regretting going with a company to make my cake, wonder how many more rookie mistakes I'll make throughout the planning!

You can always cancel? How much deposit have you paid? Ask around, friends etc. It is surprising who will know some who will make cakes. My nan would have done mine but she passed away a number of years ago.

If you do find someone, and it is cheaper. Then it could be worth losing the deposit? But don't cancel until you are sure you have found some one

The deposit was £100 so don't really want to lose it ☹️

I got 10% off and free delivery to venue though, we've still to chose a cake but at this particular cake shop they all seem to start at about £400.

Oh well you live and learn I suppose!

Don't blame you, £100 is allot. But there is other areas you could save so it won't feel so bad. Also your cake will be beautiful once choosen

    Hi,

Cakes don't need to be that expensive especially if you like the more simple designs so I'd ask your cake shop for a quote even on a design they don't already dislpay. Mine was £230 including the extra cutting cake. I did get a good price because it was at 2008 prices and an exhibition discount but maybe only saved £30.

I was going to get an M&S cake but with all the hassle of picking it up, decorating it etc I thought spending a bit more was well worth it.

Some lovely cakes there! I haven't ordered mine yet, but after seeing about Waitrose cakes I'm thinking something like this would be easy to do, and not too expensive if I get my florist to add some flowers, and just add a bit of ribbon.

Mine's going to be based on this (I'm making it arrrgh!) but the flowers are going to be cream and burgandy and the cupcake cases gold with some trailing ivy wrapped round. Can you guess my colour scheme at all. ?

I personally am not bothered in the slightest by wedding cake (although i do think theyre BEAUTIFUL i just can't justify spending hundreds of pounds on a cake!)

so i'm having a chocolate fountain in the evening and am also asking my local WI ladies to make my wedding cake which no doubt will taste amazing but cost next to ziltch!!!!!

I wanted a real WOW cake...so have gone for this one. But instead of fruit we're having Thornton's continental truffles and iced pearls to match my pearl theme.
