Cake? Go crazy or keep it simple? *FLASH*

tinkerbelly1983, 12 February, 2011 at 19:29 Posted on Planning 0 8

Here is the cake I originally saw and thought 'WOW I want it, I must have it'

Note: I am making my own cake. I'm not a professional but without blowing my own trumpet, I ain't half bad at making cakes

I love this cake, I really do, and I'm confident I could make it just as fabulous as this. However I am i tad concerned about getting it to the venue in one piece. Because of the vine up it I don't think i can split it and transport it as seperate cakes and our venue is a barn down a bouncy bouncy country lane. I fear disaster could strike.

I've been googling (gawd i love google) and I've found this...

Mmmm I really like this...its simple, elegant and fits our autumnal theme.

My initial thoughts were that I wanted something really snazzy, I've made a lot of awesome novelty cakes and I think most guests will be expecting something spectacular from me. But in reality I need something I can actually transport in the back of a car and I'm working right up to the wedding so will I have time to create a delicate leafy monster of a cake?

What dya reck???

Personally i prefer the 1st one, but the second one is really different, which actually sounds like thats what you want? I am no cake expert lol, but could you add some sort of icing leaves to give it a bit more of a '3d' effect? both great cakes!

Absolutely LOVE the first, its stunning! Not so keen on the second.

Could you not make it so that you could separate it, i.e. a break in the vine?

I guess if i take my tool kit I can patch it up at the venue I guess. I'm just having nightmares that all the leaves will break and it will be all crappy! I'm probably overreacting, people have cakes with delicate sugar flowers on all the time and they are fine. If I have spares it could be ok.

If you use proper petal paste and not just sugar paste then the leaves and flowers should be quite sturdy, and use proper edible glue not just sugarpaste and water as it holds much better.

I am also making my wedding cake and though I have been making novelty cakes for years, I have just completed a sugarcraft course so I could learn some 'tricks of the trade' and boy am I glad I did!

If you haven't already done one then I would really recommend trying to at least do a one-day course as the short-cuts and tips you pick up are invaluable.

I really like both of them. I actually prefer the bottom one as it is unusal (in a good way) and I think it looks rather retro (which I rather like)
