Cake help needed *with flash*

KatalinaNastyCough, 1 September, 2011 at 10:11 Posted on Planning 0 14

Hi Everyone!

I have no clue when it comes to cakes whats expensive and what isn't!

I've just been quoted £250 for a cake like this:

tier sizes would be 12", 10" and 8", bottom layer will be fruit cake, middle tier lemon sponge and and top layer vanilla sponge.

Is this quote reasonable? too expensive? a bargain???

Thanks guys!

Sounds like a pretty reasonable price to me.

We're having an Italian cake - they're much cheaper and about a million times tastier Smiley laugh

If the leaves are sugar leaves then £250 is a great price, those alone will take hours to do (i have had to make 50 oak tree leaves before , dont ask how long it took lol)

What is an Italian wedding cake? And where are you getting yours made?

I only sak because as a rule, M never really likes cake - he is keen on cupcakes for the wedding, but I would quite like a big white cake and I was wondering if an Italian wedding cake might be incredibly delicious and to M's liking AND big and white for me ?

Well, I'm from Bedford (which has a large concentration of Italian people) so there are literally LOADS of Italian cafe and pasticcerias.

Here's the website for one of the Italian cake shops in my town:

    https://www.amalfipasticceria.co.uk/Products.aspx

Basically, an Italian cake is a sponge cake laced with alcohol (rum/amaretto etc). It's then filled with an Italian style pastisserie cream which is like milk and eggs and custard and stuff. It's predominantly dairy instead of flour and sugar.

Hi caroline, I'm in Newcastle upon Tyne, and it's a local lady who works from home. Not sure how happy she would be to have her details placed on here but if your interested send me a private message and I'll give you her details.

My sister got married in Italy to an Italian so had an Italian cake - think cream gateau with regal icing holding it together rather than cake and you're half way there. It was a seven storey monstrosity that wobbled very precariously on the trolley when it got wheeled in which provided a good comedy moment!! We had provided a fruit cake with marzipan as the base layer as a nod to the English tradition but the Italians didn't get teh marzipan bit so took it all off and covered fruit cake in regal icing which turned it green!

    It's still a talking point!!
