"cake" idea - flash

rebecca2286, 10 November, 2010 at 12:24 Posted on Planning 0 12

Right we are working on a budget, dont really want cake as its uber expensive and noone really enjoys it that much. So I had an idea today.

Make a traditional three tier cake entirely from bars of chocolate! Everyone likes chocolate!! We could then dcorate it like a normal cake with ribbon and chocolate sea shells.

I drew, a VERY BAD sketch......

I worked out it would cost no more than about £30!!!!

Thoughts??

Interesting idea - if you have access to a wholesalers like Bookers you'll probably find that it costs even less.

Some people don't do chocolate - some don't like it, some can't eat it for dietary reasons, some just won't because they think it'll make them fat - so it might be worth having an alternative but then again, you shouldn't necessarily have to to cater for everyone's particular circumstances if it's just one or two people.

Is this wrapped or unwrapped bars? Just thinking if folk get to take a wrapped bar that would work well, but if its unwrapped?....

Very cool idea tho' - very different!

Could you do it in bars in your colour theme??

    Hmm definatley different..! granted

but I'm not sure how much of the chocolate would be eaten - after a few pieces at most people wouldnt want anymore.

How about a profeterole type of donuts or just cupcakes - you could do these more cheaply than a cake?

I like the idea, my worry for you would be that it would melt! What time of year are you getting married? You can get plain fruit cakes from a supermarket and decorate yourselves if you wanted to save money? Or how about have a cheesecake cake? Hire a stand that holds each tier separately and have a chocolate, lemon, vanilla cheesecake tier??

One of those little bars of Dairy Milk that costs about 50p, or a Milky Bar, aren't that big really.

    Love the idea!

    Practical head on though:

If it's hot in your venue (weather or heating) you may have an issue with melting!

Do you have children coming? Children, chocolate and posh wedding clothes...

And also what SP said; people might not want to take a piece of unwrapped chocolate, especially if it's melty / been touched by 20 people before / licked by kids (yum! Actually, just make one for yourself and lick it!) etc.

That sounds completely down on the idea but if you could overcome some issues I think it would be brilliant!

ETA: how would you serve it? If it's served as per your pic, you could collapsing issues if people don't take pieces carefully. It could end up as a big chocolatey version of jenga!

As my colleagues say I am a fatty waiting to burst out due to my love of chocolate so...

...I love this idea! And I am not trying to knock this fab idea, but my initial thougts is that it wouldn't be good quality choccy else it wouldn't be eaten and might look cheap - I know that you have said £30 but assuming you wanted it the same size as a A4 sheet that's going to be either a huuuge bar or a good 6 standard bars per layer, by the time you've got a good 5 layers for the base layer- thats 30 bars of choccy at £1.50-£2 for a quality choccy? And thats only one layer?

So IMO... depends if your doing it as you love choccy or because you want a budget alternative. If option a - faaab idea, if option b - think you could find cheaper.

Wow it's a great idea!! My OH is a chocoholic he would love it ?

I'm planning on buying plained iced cakes and making it up myself as they are so expensive!

    Good Luck xx

Could you make up your ow npersonalised wrappers in your colour /theme to go ontop of the real wrapper?? "Rebecca and Mr Rebecca (date) Thank you for sharing our special day" and double them up as favours?

I think that one on the above link will probably work ou a little better. You dont need to be an expert cake maker to do it either because all the chocolate bars will hide any sins.

Mine is a dark chocolate version of 315 on Sherries link. Sugerpaste flowers instead of fruit though. Its only costing me about £40 - £50 to make.

I'll be honest the idea of unwrapped, melty chocolate all stuck together doesn't sound a great idea to me. It also makes me think of the stacked up chocolate finger piles that I see at every child party my children get invited to.

But the idea as given by excited bee is a fabulous idea! takes to a whole another level and would be very classy.

It would be very easy, quick and cheap to design and print your own labels and then just to rewrap the chocolate. Your names and the date, maybe a nice photo of both you.

If you fancied being a bit cleverer how about designing a printing the labels so that when you stack it together as cake the labels actually have the design of the ribbon, icing and other decoration on? it would take a bit of thinking about, but again would look very artisitic and classy. i.e. it would fit together like a big 3d jigsaw!

Why would this happen?? Who lets kids lick wedding cakes???!!!! And therefore why would it be any different if it were made of chocolate? And did anyone have "cake fondling" issues at their wedding? When we "cut" the cake, it'd just get broken into pieces, the same as any cake?!

Anyway, thanks for the thoughts people, maybe wrappers is the way forward to avoid the cake being licked by passers by! ;-) Hehe!!
