Cake inspiration needed

samidolls, 2 February, 2015 at 19:51 Posted on Planning 0 10

Off to meet the cake man on Wednesday and need some ideas!

Our colour scheme is royal blue, but I am struggling to find cakes I like in the right colours that aren't too much.

Please flash me some of your cakes for inspiration!!

Always happy to flash mine, but probably not at all helpful to you...

Could you not go for a cake themed around something special to you and your OH rather than your colour scheme? A hobby, etc?

Alternatively here a few blue cakes...

Or you could go for plain-ish decoration and a blue velvet cake?

Have you looked at styles not colours?

This may not be helpful at all but I thought about mine like this... How many tiers I wanted, what looked right height wise. How I was going to incorporate my theme (winter butterflies), cake toppers, and extras. I searched individual aspects of the cakes, found ideas I liked and then brought in colours etc. I'm sure that your cake man will have some ideas to help you along the way too xxx

Thanks for the replies so far guys,

Miss pickle, I like the 3rd blue cake (with the ribbon), i just don't like the pattern but the difference between the tiers is cool

I think we want something fairly simple, with blue accents, but there seems to be a lot of blue or not very much or I don't like the design.

Our only other theme really is photos, having pictures in the table plan and on the tables but not sure I'd be able to get that onto a cake!

I'm guessing part of my problem is that I am a amateur baker myself. I do a lot of cakes and am a complete perfectionist, so I always spot something that niggles at me on my own cakes and down want to do that with our wedding cake...

This is almost as bad as searching for THE dress, I keep waiting for something to just wow me!

Instead of looking for royal blue cakes, can I suggest looking for the style of cake you want. You may find just what you're looking for in a different colour.

I second the suggestion to search for style over colour. I never found a picture of one i exactly lliked, but through looking at styles i was able to tell my cake maker i wanted a rustic 3 tier square cake with each tier having slightly different textured icing finishes and a sugar flower cascade to match the flowers in my bouquet. Oh, and my pig had to sit on top. You cake maker will be able to really help you with ideas if you have a platform lfor them to build off. My cake maker even had the idea of putting muddy chocolate 'footprints' up the back to make it look like the pig had really climbed up onto the cake, a cute little touch only seen from the back, so in all the photos it looked like a traditional cake.

Find cakes that you like bits of, print them off, circle your favourite bit and take them with you.

a good cake maker will be able to create you something unique for your wedding day.
