Cake Question and on a different topic my mother is no longer coming to the wedding!!

mrslowndes2b, 7 April, 2010 at 21:15 Posted on Planning 0 16

Evening All

Quick cake questions - were having a plain one from m&s and decoarting it ourselves were having 3 tiers and all sponge as neither of us really like fruit my question can we just stack them on top of each other or do we have to place them on those dowler things?? (very technical lol) Any help or anyone stacked them straight on top of each other would be great to see if it was a sucess!!

On a differnt note my mother is no longer coming to the wedding - we havnt really spoke to each other for almost two years and as the wedding is fast approaching I took the adult decision to txt and see how she was etc.......she sent me back a load of abuse!! So Ive made the decision not to invite her I gently told her this to which she replied she didnt want to come anyway!!! Oh well I have a fantastic step mother who has come dress shopping with me, helped with arrangements etc Im just very lucky to have her!!

Families eh!!!! lol

No cake expert but i think you have to use the dowels for support.

Sorry to hear about the trouble with your mum, but glad your all happy about it x

Thanks for the reply Meh we both wanted them stacked on top of each other......

Should I be more upset about my "mother" than the cake lol??? We havnt been on good terms in years now so Im kindda relived I dont have to worry what she might say or do at the wedding!!

    xx

Im sorry your mum wasnt able to take the same initiative as you and be a little more 'adult' about this but hey i think in the long run you have made the right choice and at least you wont be on edge as you may have been with her there x

as for the cake, its perfectly doable i think here are a few pics i found:

I was confused about this too, I popped into local M and S to ask and she thinks- doesnt know for certain!- that the one I wantcomes in 3 separate boxes but you just stack them with nothing between.

Your mum should be more supportive! If you've got a great step mum I would let her look after you your mum will regret it one day!

On the cake not I've seen these which I was considering for my cake on http://www.myperfectweddingshop.co.uk/weddingcakestand.html

they have quite a few different ones

If you are having all 3 fruit it should be okay.... even a sponge on top if you wished, on top of fruit would be fine. These come on cake boards so be careful removing them from the board.

I had an M&S one, didnt get to eat enough of it, lolol.... but we used pillars to keep it traditional etc...

    What said...

Dowels are needed to stop the cakes from sinking, it also makes it more sturdy

Im having a m&s cake too, but the one with the little dots on it, romantica pearl or something.

As steelgoddess said, you will need the dowels to support the cake (even if all sponge), the pillars (like teehee had) are used if you want to stack the cakes with 'gaps' inbetween, so you see the pillars.

I ordered my cake in January I think for our wedding at the end of April ,so you can definately order before 21 days, I think it comes up saying you can collect from as early as 21 days, so I would def order before then!

There is a link on the m&s website showing you how to stack the cakes which is fab -

    https://www.marksandspencer.com/l/food-to-order/cakes

I can't access the tv thing at work, but if you go to the bottom of the page in the link above and click on the 'view video making of our cakes' then there are other video's available that show them being stacked.
