Cake size question!

Davialle, 10 August, 2012 at 09:55 Posted on Planning 0 7

Hi Hitchers!

Hoping someone can help me... I need a cake to feed 80 guests. How many tiers and what size should they be? I'm thinking two tiers of 8in and 12in. Does anyone have a guide for how many each size tier serves? 6, 8, 10, 12....?

Thank you! x

    Have you tried googling?

    This might help: https://wilton.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-wilton-Site/en_US/Link-Category?cgid=education-making-tiered-cakes

Thanks Teal that's really helpful! I came across a few charts but I wondered if any cake makers on here knew for certain, or any brides had ordered a cake for roughly 80 guests. I want to make sure there's enough cake! x

    4" feeds 6

    6" feeds 12

    8" feeds 23

    10" feeds 35

    12" feeds 50

...they are the rough sizes we have been given so hope that helps....also if you have fruit cake I think a smaller portion would be served as its richer x

I have to remember not to let my OH anywhere near the cutting up of the cake otherwise a 12'' tier would probably only feed about 10 - bless him he has no idea about portion sizes when it comes to cake the bigger the better is his motto

Having just got married, this is one issue we had. We had 3 tiers, 12, 10, 8. This should have been plenty given there were only 60 day guests so thought there would be plenty left for evening guests. We only had about 15n slices left in the evening (although perhaps our day guests ate too much lol)

Thanks so much to everyone for your help. In case anybody else needs an idea, I found this: http://yakescakes.com/img/Cake_Tiers1.jpg

I didn't realise that slice size is a particular way of cutting the cake which makes 1x1 or 1x2inch pieces, which caterers are taught to do. If you're self-catering (as we are) then you'll need to either do it the correct way or make sure you overestimate servings in case you cut larger slices. I'm sure most of you know this but it was a mystery to me!
