Cake supplier in Worcester *flash*

"About Time" Bride, 29 October, 2014 at 10:14 Posted on Planning 0 11

Hello Ladies

I'm having a very productive week in terms of wedding planning, we have delivered the marriage authorities to Worcester registry office and had a meeting with the venue, its been confirmed that we will be the only wedding of the day so got a free upgrade to the better honeymoon suite ?

We've decided on the invites and ordered the supplies so I can get crafting soon, I've booked hair and make-up for the day and looks like I've finally found adult bridesmaid dresses within budget!

As I'm on a roll I'm now looking at the cake and was hoping someone out there can help! Below is a pic of a cake I have fallen in love with and fits our theme perfectly.

We want to use the cake as dessert for the evening buffet and we have around 200 guests, we are getting married in Worcester so was thinking its best to have it made there and set up at the venue by the suppliers.

However we were given an estimate at a wedding fayre of £550.00 (because its a simple design - they said!) This is definitely out of our budget Smiley sad is this an average price? Do I have to adjust my expectations?

I do have another option, of having the cake made by my brothers friend in Birmingham and transporting it myself to the venue, but I keep having visions of it getting ruined on the journey.

Any advice / recommendations would be appreciated

Sorry I'm no help on cake suppliers as my cousins making mine but it's nice to see another Worcestershire bride on here. I can't see the picture but £550 does seem a lot for a simple cake. If you seperate the layers and have each layer in a cake box you should be ok transporting them. Where are you getting married? Do you mind me asking who you're getting to do your hair and makeup? I'm struggling to find anyone!

Hello! We are getting married in Bransford at the Bank House, we took a bit of a risk booking it last year before the refurbishments started, but so glad we did now, they have really turned it around and the team there are lovely. Where are you getting married?

I wonder why you can't see pic, I'm new to this and probably done it wrong lol.

Good idea about separating them, there is a trail of flowers from top to bottom, so just unsure if you can separate it without ruining the design.

For hair and make-up, I'm using a Birmingham based company called Dolled Updolls who are willing to travel to Worcester, they did my sisters wedding hair and make-up and I know them well so it wasn't a hard decision for me. You can find them on facebook

    Good luck in your search.

Thanks, I've been to a wedding at The Bank House before it was refurbished and it was a great day, food was lovely. I'm getting married the other side of Evesham at Salford Hall Hotel. I'll have a look at their facebook thanks. Good luck with the cake search!

Most cakes are transported layer by layer- it is way too much of a risk to transport them 'whole'. If you look carefully at your design you will see that the flowers aren't attached to each other but to the cake layer each flower is next to, and the ones on the bottom layer are attached to the cake and the base.

Our cake maker is in Coventry and I don't think she travels but we are paying £250 (it's a 'simple' cake design too) for around 100 servings- one fruit layer and two Victoria sponge.

The cost of cakes crops with frequently. At the end of the day it comes down to what you want against what you can afford or are willing to pay against the cake makers availability in the area. Personally - I wouldn't want the responsiblity for transporting and setting up a cake over a distance. Ours is a very detailed and personal cake, two tiers and is not able to be be broken down and we think we've got a bargain at £250. But "good" cake makers with massive repuatations can charge the earth.

I don't think what you're looking at is "simple" there's a shed load of work involved in building somethinglike the picture you've shown and creating those flowers and transposrting, setting up and doing any on site repair work all mounts up. But shop around. Use FB and other social media to find local cake makers to your venue. Also google. That's how we found ours Smiley smile

£550 to serve 200 people isn't too bad. The estimates others are giving on here are for smaller cakes - For example £385 for 120 people works out at £3.20 per person. £550 works out at £2.75 per person so yours is actually cheaper. The other thing you haven't mentioned is whether you want it traditional fruit or sponge. Generally sponge is cheaper than fruit.

If the cost of the whole cake serving 200 people is out of your budget you could have a smaller cake - say for 100 people - for display and then some cutting bars to cut up and give to the guests. cutting bars are generally cheaper as they are iced simply with no decoration on so the guests don't see them.Once it is all cut up it would be difficult to tell who has a bit from the original cake and who has a bit from the cutting bar.

Some people rave about M&S cakes - a simple rose design vanilla sponge wedding cake on there is £199 and serves 140 so you would also need at least 3 cutting bars at £14 - so from M&S it would be £241. That might give you a benchmark for a plain sponge simple cake that you assemble yourself mass produced. So if even this is out of your budget then you may need to adjust your expectations.

Thank you for all the help ladies, somebody else mentioned the M&S cakes to me - so that is something to look into.

We hadn't really decided on what type of cake we wanted, was originally thinking different layers to give people a choice.

I think the main problem is the number of servings, so the plain cake 'out the back' sounds good to me.

I'm afraid I'm one of those people that once I find something I like nothing else compares, which is why the budget could spiral out of control. I'll have to rely on you lovely lot to keep me in check ?

    Good news Ladies!

I have found a company to make the cake we wanted! They are opposite our venue and can do the cake with 2 out of the 4 being dummy layers and then 2 kitchen cakes to make up the portions we need - all for £325.00.

I've seen them at a wedding fayre in the past and thought there cakes were so good they would be way above budget, but the lady there is fantastic and gave us plenty of options to get to what we wanted at budget.

Whoop Whoop! So happy and that's another item off the list..

Have you thought about a cupcake tower? We also need a cake to feed 200 people. When looking we got quotes between £500 & £950. We have now decided on a cupcake tower with a cake on top to cut for £200! The advantages other than the price for me were that they can be put out with evening buffet if they dont get eaten, any left overs can also be taken home & will last up to 5 days. Whereas when you cut a cake, the slices start to dry out & any left overs will probs have to thrown. I'd be so upset if i spent a fortune on a cake for most of it to be thrown. Just another idea fir you Smiley smile
