Cake tastings

owlalice, 2 February, 2014 at 21:16 Posted on Planning 0 6

Just wanted opinions on cake tasting pleeeeease! I went to a wedding fair but out of all of the cake stalls, only 1 had cake samples to eat! Call me crazy, but taste is as ( if not more important) than the look of the cake. I've had a look at websites, and seen a few potentials, but most of them say you can have a tasting at a consultation. Does a consultation mean you have to commit yourself to that baker, or is it the same as meeting a few photographers to see which one you gel with the best, etc?

This was one of my main bugbears while planning!

A "consultation" shouldn't commit you to buying anything, it should just be an initial meeting to look at their work and talk about ideas/prices. If you don't like it, you are free to say no at that point.

My cake maker allows people to go along and try some cake for free with no obligation to book Smiley smile

The cake make I recommend invites you round to taste cake and have a chat. No commitment. Where are you and we might be able to recommend suppliers?

The woman I've ordered my cake from gave us a massive bit of cake. It was almost like a small cake in itself and was enough for 4 people to have a bit.

There was no pressure what so ever to buy, the cake was SO nice that I think the woman was comfortable enough to give no pressure samples. The only thing she asked was whether we minded waiting a week for the sample so she could make it when she was doing a similar cake order so she just makes a slightly bigger batch.

I would think twice about going somewhere which charged for a consultation & in my opinion you shouldn't feel you have to go with them just because they've given you a consultation.

Thank you all for the quick replies! I live in Bournemouth (Dorset area) Found some amazing looking cakes, but just don't know how they taste! Also, getting on well with the cake makers is important.

A consultation is just that, you are not committing to buy/use their service.

Some bakers do charge a minimal fee for a tasting though which they will knock off the price of the cake if you go ahead with them.

You shouldn't be tied at all if it's just a consultation. We had a cake tasting at our first consultation and (unfortunately) it was lovely and we booked there and then - personally I would have preferred a few more cake tasting sessions!! ?
