Cake trouble...can you all give me a flash please?

Gurzle, 1 March, 2011 at 13:56 Posted on Planning 0 11

Hi everyone

Me and M are looking at cakes at the minute and he would prefer to try and really cut costs in this dept (keep it to about £200 - we are in Hertfordshire where everything costs more, I know this sounds like a fair budget otherwise), whereas I keep thinking "Oh, it's only another £300 and we could get something amazing!"

Is it possible to get something really lovely for £200-250? M likes cupcakes, too, which I had assumed would be cheaper but don't seem to be, really. My only requirement is, I'd like to to be a 'tall' cake, I just like tall ones best!

WOuld you mind give me a quick flash of your cakes please?

Thank you! xxx

I think that is more than enough to get a really nice cake....shame I don't live closer as I would do one for you!

What about trying somewhere like M&S and adding some 'personality' yourself??

I live in London and am getting a 4-tier cake plus cutting cakes to feed 200... it's only costing me £280 including delivery, set-up and elaborate sugar decorations so I am sure there must be someone in Herts! Hope you manage to find somewhere. Alternatively, as mentioned, you could get an M&S cake (or Asda or Waitrose or Tesco) and decorate it yourself. I believe you buy the tiers all separately so you can stack 'em high if that's your preference.

We are buying ours from Waitrose I think. This is how I would like it done, which is from a pic on their website. If you wanted it taller you could just buy more tiers...?

I wanted a tall cake too. This is ours, the middle layer is double so its the same height as a 4 tier. We are putting ours on a log stand that is 4 inches high

Ways of cutting the cost is having dummy polystyrene cake layers for the 'show' cake, then having cheaper plain sheet cakes for giving out. Your guests will never know!

Or use pillars, this will give height

Another way of saving money is if you would like a tall cake with quite a few tiers you could always have a "dummy tier" its iced the same as the others and looks completely real but its some sort of mould under the icing instead of cake thats what I'm doing so I can have four tiers :o) xx my cake will be something like this :

Sort of a mix between the two but with an aqua ribbon instead of the cream or black and my mum is a cake maker and decorator so we are making it together :o) xx

Hi FutureMrsJ...do you mind telling me who your supplier is? I like right on the Herts/London border so they may well cover our area and it sounds like a fantastic deal for a 4 tier cake

What a shame MrsShark - I would have loved you to make my cake! Unfortunately, I am about as delicate-fingered as an elephant and can burn a boiled egg if left unattended, so an interference from me might end in disaster!

All of the cakes you have all posted are B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L !! xx

I can't help with suppliers - but a nice tall cake would be do-able on your budget.

We have a dummy tier on ours and a seperate cutting cake which will be kept in the kitched (less elaborately decorated) which we needed to support our cake as it is very heavy, but also brought costs down significantly too.

It has cost us near enough £500 but it will be worth it for us - satyng that, each of the details on the drape in this case can take hours to create - you can see but it drapes into little hearts.

Sorry, I am not in your area so can't help, but here's a flash of our cake. I t will be 3 tiers, two carrot cake and one chocolate (or the other way round, have not decided yet) and the decorations will be natural:

We're getting ours from Genuine Cakes in Watford. I'd definitely recommend them. I think we spent about £270 on a cake which will serve 100 people and that includes delivery and set up. This is the polystyrene example. It'll have tartan ribbon round the tiers.

No problem... it's www.classiccakes.moonfruit.com if you go to the gallery on their website and click on a photo, it tells you how much they charge for making the cake, then travel is on top. Give them an email, Corinne (who runs the business) is a really lovely lady and very accommodating!

I live quite a way away from them, they are a Sussex supplier really but we are in south-west London so perhaps a bit closer than North London would be. But apparently they will deliver to Birmingham and Lincolnshire so it's always worth asking!

Thank you thank you FutureMrsJ - I have looked on their website, so reasonable and STUNNING cakes, I can see why you chose them! I will email them - fingers crossed they will venture out to Hertfordshire! xx
