Cakes buying or making your own?

agentblackcat, 13 April, 2010 at 21:00 Posted on Planning 0 15

Hey everyone

Was going to buy a cake from good old marks and sparks and decorate it myself but then I went to a wedding fair and saw the most gorgeous square 3 tiered cake. So my question tonight is how much you paying for your cake and anyone want to flash their cake? The cake I saw I don't have a picture of but was all white with pearl decoration cascading down one corner like a waterfall with flower top. Was quoted £350 was this cake.

Aww thats great, I am now thinking of making my own due to seeing this square one I like. But then H2B pointedout that it may bw tricky to get all the tiers the right height so I might just be better buying one lol. I hate making decisions - only who knows how I have organiced anything so far lol x

I'm making my own (with a little help from my brother and sister) - but we're having cupcakes so it should be easy. My ma is not impressed and is worried it'll be rubbish, but I'm not worried. In my head I am a cake maker extraordinaire. But then, in my head I'm also a fantastic singer who could give Beyonce a run for her money. Hmm, maybe I should rethink this one....

I was having an M&S cake and then decided to book one when we freed up some of our budget.

We are having this as a top tier and 60 cupcakes with cake wraps and stand hire for 350

I think if you've never made anything like this before you might find it quite stressful. I've made a few now and I still find square cakes the hardest - in terms of trimming the cake down to be level and perfectly square, and in terms of covering. It can be quite an art to get sugarpaste to sit smoothly over square corners. Also, you'd have to be pretty nifty with a piping bag to do neat pearls.

I made my friend's cake and took a week off work as it was the first wedding cake I'd done! Don't underestimate the time you'd need.

I'm making my own with some help from friends - I'm going to bake the bottom fruit tier and they're going to do the top two sponge tiers, and then I'll decorate it all.

I think I might be mad!

My lovely nanny is making her traditional chocolate cake - although she has never done it with Tiers before, so we're going to spend the summer practising... and eating lots of cake!

We'll then add pretty ribbon and hopefully flowers.

    I'm ordering my cake, 4 tiers, 600.

if you havent got much experience it might not look or taste as good as something you buy. AND it will just add to your list of things to do and stress you out right before the wedding. I say if you can find room in your budget to order it, then do it!

Well so far i havent got a price for a cake but its just to get mine iced. My mums baking ours-and apparently the MIL2b is doing a teir as well. I havent got a pic of the one i want here as im in work! but its a square one, 3 fruit teirs. I would like another madiera or sponge cake as well. I was going to get it put out just to be cut but depending on the price i think i might like it a wee farm cake! (as my OH is a farmer!) bit like this one but square!

Please note ladies, that some of us actually fall just above M&S prices now on cakes, so you could get a bespoke cake, made to your instructions, for just a small amount more !!!

This will sound weird, but most M&S cakes are very thin, and you could end up with getting twice as much (in depth) for almost the same money !
