cakey question update

cola, 12 January, 2010 at 00:05 Posted on Planning 0 19

This seems to be driving me a bit mad, i know its a while away yet but do you think £150 is unrealistic for a wedding cake for 60 people? i really don't mind the flavour but i don't want to go into a cake shop and get laughed out of it. OH didn't like the M&S Cakes so they are ruled out and no one i know can bake.

IMO i don't think you can get a made cake for that, just shop bought. Don't take my word for it, i'd be ringing around cake makers and tell them straight you've got £150 and not a penny more can they help you.

You can get a 1 tier cake made for around £150, but if you want 2 or 3 tiers you'd be looking at a minimum of £220 to £250 I'm afraid.

M&S cakes have really improved over the last couple of years and are an absolute bargain! Waitrose also do a great range of wedding cakes so if you're on a budget I would definitely go down that route as you'll get a lot more cake for your money.

I've got to say I disagree with the others. I've not ordered my cake yet - going at the end of the month but the bakers that are doing mine said that a 3 tier cake averages £140.

Also, it really depends what part of the country you are in and where you go. Look for smaller bakers instead of the already established bigger ones as they can sometimes double prices.

I don't think that's unrealistic, we found the 2 or 3 tier cakes were more expensive because we wanted a fruit cake for the bottom tier. If your happy to go for sponge I don't think that will be an issue. Just be up front and tell them you need a cake for 60 and your max spend if £150, I can't see how they couldn't work to your spec.

I have to say though, the M&S cakes are really lovely now, that's what we've decided to go for!

Just a thought...depending on what the cake will look like someone told me not to say it was for a wedding, as with many things the price can get bumped up as soon as the 'W' word is mentioned! I think going to speak to bakers is a better idea.

Not sure really, my 3 tier (bottom fruit, top 2 sponge) was made by my friends mum who didn't charge for her time (only ingrediants) and that cost £120!!!
