Calling all alternative music brides!

kitcat10210, 16 May, 2013 at 13:15 Posted on Planning 0 41

I want a really nice instrumental of a song to walk down the aisle to. At the moment the front runner is Counting Crows - Colorblind.

However! I would love it if i could find something more meaningful to me. Music has played a massive part in my life, from the day i was in highschool and everyone was listening to christina aguilera and i dared to listen to bands like Funeral for a Friend and The used and got bullied to a frightening level over my tastes for being different.

But enough of the sob story. My main problem is im having a mental block! I have 100+ CDs of all my old favourite bands but theyre all at my parents house and i wont be going over there for a while.

Can anyone please jog my memory and recommend any songs or even just bands that may be lurking in the back of my subconcious somewhere that ive totally forgotten about. I'm talking about bands and songs like Lostprophets, The used (on my own, blue and yellow), FFAF (History), BFMV (tears dont fall), murderdolls, HIM, The Calling (wherever you will go).

I Just seem to be having the worlds biggest mental block - any suggestions would be very much appreciated. x

It may be a bit before your time, and it's not instrumental, but what about '3 Libras' by A Perfect Circle? It does take a bit of a while to get to the chorus though...I like 'Rooftops' by lostprophets too. How about 30 Seconds to Mars? They tend to have some orchestral-type songs?

I am really struggling with this too, not being a 'typical' girly bride- there are a lot of people on here into their indie / alternative stuff. You should get plenty of suggestions! Good luck!

There's also 'The Chad Who Loved Me' by Mansun...? Lots of violins.

I've always quite liked the instrumental version of "Emily" by From First to Last

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEuooJFxuu0

If you just youtube the name of some bands you like and add "instrumental" to the end, there are loads of amazing instrumental versions of most songs. Taking back sunday have some great ones. Deftones, Marilyn Manson, Nirvana. You're spoilt for choice really. What were you after, an actual love song, strings version?

Edit: The piano version of "Hollow crown" by Architects is also lovely. It's a bit slow to start (becomes more interesting about a minute in)

Im not in the slightest. When i was younger i was the whole package of a mothers worst nightmare - fishnet tights, baggy jeans, the only skirt i ever wore was purple denim and was distressed. Hoodies and tshirts with every band going on them. She nearly had a fit when i came home with my hair purple one day.

When i was about 19 years old and i wore reasonably normal clothes had my dark hair back and wore normal make up did she confess that she prayed every day that it was just a phase and that i would grow out of both the music and clothes. I didnt grow out of it though as such, i just woke up for college one morning and just could not be bothered with how long it took to get ready in the mornings lol.

I still had Bullet for my Valentine screeching out of the surround sound speakers in my bedroom til the day i moved out though :-p

I still get nostalgia days just like today where my H2B will come home from work in around half hour and walk through the door to heavy metal blaring out. The look on his face when he remembers what hes marrying always makes me smile. He's your more classical music kind of boy haha

Thats exactly what I've been doing! I'm just having a mental block when it comes to the bands i used to listen to. Like From First to Last! I completely forgot about them til you mentioned them.

It doesnt necessarily need to be a love song, they could be singing about going on a murderous rampage as long as the backing track sounds nice on its own :-) lol

Did you have a last.fm account by any chance?

I logged into my old one a couple of weeks ago and remembered loads of bands I used to love and had completely forgotten about, or not listened to for a while.

If so try logging in and see if anything jogs your memory ?

Glassjaw, Spineshank, MCR, Everytime I die, senses fail, Alexisonfire, Incubus, From Autumn to Ashes, Finch, Silverstein, Billy Talent, SOAD, Chevelle, Norma Jean, At the drive in, Saosin, those are all vaguely from the same kind of time period if my memory is serving me correctly. Any of those any good/familiar?

*sigh*...how I miss dyeing my hair! I had blue, red and purple. I used to LOVE it! But you're right- it's too high maintenance to keep up. I work at a University and I often get a little twinge of jealousy when I see students with technicolour hair- I especially love the bright blue. I know what you mean about the clothes too...my favourite outfit was a very short sequinned mini dress, a 3/4 length faux-leopard print jacket with black & white stripy tights and massive DM boots! I used to live in bellbottom corduroys (this was the era of 90s indie) and polyester shirts from charity shops. I used to go to college in jeans, one of my dad's old shirts and a tie! Loved it. Oh well, we all have to grow up occasionally. Having said that, I still rue having to 'dress up' to go anywhere when I just want to chuck on my old jeans and trainers, have a good old mosh and get covered in beer. Now THAT's a good night out!

Fortunately, my mum is a bit of an old hippy, so she was cool with it all.

Classical music has a lot in common with metal. There was a really interesting series on recently where this guy was looking at the history of metal, and he cited Wagner (the composer, not the X-Factor monstrosity) as the original metalhead...

HAHA! It's actually really cheered me up to know im not the only person who looks at these kids and gets hair envy!

I wanted to go back purple a couple of weeks ago but my MOH is a hairdresser and has banned me from doing it. Apparently i will thank her when it comes to my wedding day and my hair is in great condition. However true that may be, i still want to sulk like a teenager because im not allowed purple hair lol.

When i was 16/7 i went to a minimum of 1 gig a month at the local uni academy. Nothing gives you a better adrenaline rush than crowdsurfing to the front during your favourite song.

My god ive gotten old :-( I wouldnt mind but im only 23 as it is lol.

We played this during our afternoon reception. Love the Maccabees.

op- I would get yourself in spotify and look at indie/alt playlists. Hopefully something will appeal. All of 'our' songs were too shouty so we had to go back to basics.

That was what I always thought. Lovely song but I can't relate the lyrics to a wedding.

Wow I'm reminiscing now, I was into the skater side of things. The only one that springs to mind at the minute is hoobastank the reason. But I'm sure there's loads more you could have

I was going to suggest Hoobastank as I was reading through this. I almost had my brother performing an accoustic version of this for when we sign the register - just changing some of the words slightly.

I also like - Bright Eyes - First day of my life. Not too alt but the words are lovely and its still got a guitar in there somewhere!

I know, right? Don't know why they weren't more successful! Ahead of their time, I reckon. "She Makes My Nose Bleed" is an AMAZING tune.

Have you heard of the Vitamin String Quartet? They have done absolutely tons of instrumental versions of songs, they have an album or two of alternative wedding music, or have a look through their "Tribute to" collections which includes Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters and loads more.

I used two of their tracks during our (civil) service.
