Calling all Togs!

Trickers, 15 February, 2012 at 14:59 Posted on Planning 0 63

I got married 16 months ago and had an album inc in my photography package. I have now decided that I want the CD with all the images on it.

Can you tell me how much you would charge for a disc of all images if a client came back to you a while after the wedding?

TIA!?

Did you not get all the images anyway? Even on my album packages I include a USB memory stick with all of the edited photos on it.

No we didnt. We paid a LOT of money for an album only which included 120 photographs. The disc has about 700 photos on it.

Mmm I can't offer advice on what they would charge because I always give the couple all of the edited images, maybe one of the other suppliers on here work their packages that way and will be able to offer more advice. Have you spoken to your photographer yet?

I don't understand why TOGs charge extra for this (obviously apart from to make a quick buck). Surely the cost of a disc is pennies or a USB a pound or so. What are they going to do with the unprinted images anyway!? They may as well just give them to you.

Depending on their pricing structure, I can see why some tog's choose to do this. If a couple only want an album, then most of the images won't need to be processed, however if they want 700 on a disc, then another 500 or so photographs would need at least basic processing, and depending on the level of processing required, can take a very long time.

May not be of any help but if our friends and family spend £200 on photos from our Togs website we then get all of the images on CD.

I can't remember exact details Trickers, but one photographer we looked at said if we didn't get all the images from him at the time, but went back a year later he would have given us the CD with them all on for half the price he would have if we'd got them at the time. However, this was verbal and we didn't go with him in the end, so not sure if he would have stuck to this!

I'v seen similar packages to that offered, but this is one form of pricing I don't approve of in the slightest, because if I was their client I would be ticked off, and I don't know why any photographer would want to do that to their clients.

Hindsight's a wonderful thing, but just for those who might stumble across this thread before booking their photographer:

Always negotiate the cost of the disc beforehand. Does the package include the disc or just an album? If no disc will they be prepared to sell it as an (not to expensive) extra? If not and you really want all images go elsewhere. Or if you really like the photographer's work, negotiate. If he/she is inflexible, it might be better to go elsewhere anyway to someone who is prepared to bend a little. If they want your business then they should meet you halfway. Images do take time to edit and should cost extra, therefore to have them included in the original price (if required) is best and everyone knows where they stand.

As for your original question: In this digital age, people have a habit of greatly underestimating the value of photography and editing skills. If your photographer only edited the ones for the album then the cost will be far greater to have him edit the other batch as this could take days depending on his skill. If, however they are edited and just need copying to disc, I personally would charge you about £200 and let you have them. I think that may be undervaluing my skills, but as someone else said, there's no point in having them lying on a hard drive never to see the light of day again. I include a disc with all my packages as standard. I may lose sales by doing this, but I also rely on word of mouth referrals so prefer to give my clients that little bit extra. I'm nice like that ? Be interesting to hear how you go on...

Well I definitely do not underestmate the value of photography and the skills involved.

FWIW my tog has said I could have the disc for £450 which I think is a little steep to be honest!

I would include it for free, personally I would encourage my clients to share my images with their family and friends as much as they wanted.

I would do this simply because I wouldn't want my clients to feel restricted, and hopefully the more people that see my images, and speak to a happy client, the more referrals I will get.

But as I said some togs have different strategies, so I would expect the CD to cost in the region of £300 - £500 considering you said he cost allot to begin with.

    She did cost a lot!

You would charge that much even though its 16 months after the wedding?

I'd just like to point out (to everyone) that I am very happy with my tog, her work is amazing and so are my wedding photos!

I had estimated about £200. Like I said we paid a lot of money originally so I didnt want to spend more than that (£200) on the disc.

Maybe approach your photographer and try to haggle, explain £450 is way out of your budget, perhaps offer £200, and she may come down to £300 or so?

I didn't for a minute think you were underestimating the skills involved - I was generalising and not referring to anyone in particular. As i said it's very dependent on whether your photographer has edited them all or would have to do them. if they would have to edit then £450 would be quite cheap. If however they have done them then around the £200 mark is my opinion. It's very subjective and every photographer on here would probably quote you something different. I think it makes sense to pay whatever value you'd put on them and no more. But also remind the photographer that you will have some friends getting married in the future and will throw some work her way if you feel you've got a fair deal from her. If she's got any business sense, she'll see things your way...

It depends on how many photos are there, and if they're edited or not tbh, but 700 images for £450 is perfectly normal and slightly underpriced IMO, providing they are high resolution / full resolution.

I supply anywhere between 500 and 800 edited, finished images per wedding. For all day I charge **** depending on the day of the week.

So that's £1-£2 per edited, finished, professionally shot images and a week of my time (but no album). A bargain really.

In the photographers defense, it's a common belief that the value of photos to a tog goes down over time. Similar to those who have a makeover day and only take one image and expect to buy the disc a year later because a sale is better than no sale. It happens a lot and as this tog doesn't supply all the images they will be wise to it.

Not suggesting you're doing that Trickers, not in the slightest, but many do and they are sure to have a standardised response to requests for a disc of all the images.

So, in short, 700 images for £450 is very good. I'm sure they will end up processing them too, but check just in case. If you don't ask they might not do it.

    Hi Trickers

I've not been on Hitched for ages but today I saw your post (we had the same TOG). I paid for the CD package, but then upgraded it to inc an album and all of the pics on CD and it came to quite a lot more than I initially thought but I think it was well worth it. The pics on the CD are really sharp, and I've blown some up into biiiig pictures and also used them to make some photobox books for family. I think you should try to bargain with them but I think getting the CD is def worth it!

Its not the disk you are paying for, its the work that goes in to it. Prices will vary from photographer to photographer.

However they have done the work in taking the photos and the pictures are there waiting. I guess it depends on if Trickers wants them edited further but I assume a great deal of that work will already have been done seeing as the album has already been done. So i think £450 is a little excessive.

To play devils advocate for a moment...The original album was made up of 120 images that were post produced to get the fantastic result the OP wanted.

Any photographer worth their salt would surely not want to provide an extra 580 images that would look lesser by not having been treated in the same way as this could affect their credibility....So that works out as 64p per high resolution image supplied at the cost the tog has quoted......or 77p assuming that the original 120 are already accounted for......

Ok, I don't work that way, although I can understand why some do.

I wouldn't release unedited images either.

Thing is, if someone posts unedited work up on facebook, people will assume that's my 'usual standard' and that can negatively effect future business.

Just like if a couple edits the images I deliver and sticks them online. Not cool.
