camcorder???

AmzieM, 6 February, 2013 at 10:16 Posted on Planning 0 6

Hiya.

i have booked a photographer. been to the wedding venue when they had it set up to how it can be like for the big day. whilst talking to a member of staff (really helpful, he helped a lot already) he suggested to have someone with a camcorder to film the ceremony.

his reasons were that i could be extremly nervous, only concentrating on walking down aisle with my dad then to be with groom, so can miss out on other people's reactions and who is/isn't there. so if someone has got a camcorder they can film the ceremony.

is this a good idea?

he also said for that person to stand at the back and film. i dont like that idea but if the person just filmed it from where they are sat, i think that be alright.

i also thought of filming the first dance and father/daughter dance as well as doing a recieving line with the evening guests and to film that as it could be the only time that see certain people.

my mum thinks it's a rubbish idea as whoever is filming they not going to see the wedding they just be seeing it through the camera lens. but i dont see the difference to people taking photos, which i am assuming a lot of guests will be doing.

doing it as a camcorder is a cheaper idea then having a proffesional there.

thank you for any input.

With my parents and yes, even grandparents weddings they had somone do what i call a 'home video' so we are too. My brother is and the registrar actually suggested he be at the front. He'll only do key bits of the wedding like the ceremony, a bit of mingling and then speeches. This way he's still a guest and enjoying himself as wont be videoing everything and we get a video too. We bought the panasonic v100 for it with 16gb hd card. So much cheaper than getting a proffessional, will still get the bits we want so better than nothing, and it gives that home video style i love rather than editted. Also get to take it with us to watch on our minimoon and we can keep it for future use too.

Yes doing it on a camcorder is cheaper than a professional, then you could do your own flowers, make your own dress, cook the meal.....shall I go on? You really must give a lot more thought to having a professional videographer. I guarantee it will be the best money spent on the day, really! I've seen many comments on the forum about getting friends or family members to do it, often accompanied by the remark that they rarely watch it. That's because invariably it's amateurish and boring to watch. The poor person spends the day waving the camera around with their finger on the zoom button worrying about batteries and anything else that could go wrong, meanwhile missing and not enjoying the wedding. The end result is usually barely watchable. Then there are the recriminations when they mess up or miss vital shots, why put people you love in that position?

The professional (vog) will choose the ideal camera positions - it's not your problem. If it's at the front during the ceremony DON'T WORRY, he's a pro, and unlike most photographers firing off machine gun clicks he will be silent and low key. The couples hardly ever look at the camera because they are so filled with emotion and can't take everything in. Capturing these once in a lifetime moments is absolute magic and incredibly powerful to watch. And if your vog is unobtrusive as he should be you probably won't notice him all day. Then after the wedding everyone will want to see the DVD and you will want to watch it over and over, guaranteed.

As for cost of a vog, how can you afford not to have one?

    Hi AmzieM,
As a videographer I'm obviously a little biased and would say that it's a great idea! A wedding video differs greatly to wedding photographs, in that not only do you get to see everything in motion but you get to hear everything that is said (and sung!) as well. Having said that, I really feel that the most important thing is that you're comfortable and relaxed.
I've seen a number of professional videos which have been shot from the back of the venue and unfortunately all you get to see are the backs of people's heads! I would suggest that it's very important that you get your camera person to stand at the front of the venue. They don't need to be centre-stage, but perhaps tucked away at the side, which will allow them to capture guests reactions (and yours if you'd like).
To answer your Mum's concerns; I've shot a number of friends' weddings as a guest and personally love being involved in the day; however it's worth bearing in mind that whoever ends up filming will unavoidably miss some elements of the day and have a different experience to everyone else.
Best of luck with your planning!
    Steve

    Barry

A true wedding professional does not say negative things about another profession - this puts you in the bad light and not the professional you are trying to disrespect, perhaps you may like to re word your post

Actually I do regret the machine gun comment which came out a bit strong, I was just trying to make a point about how unobtrusive video filming can be during a quiet and emotional ceremony. I’d love to discuss it further but I’ve already hijacked this thread enough. That’s my vog regret, now back to the brides!

    If instead of this

" and unlike most photographers firing off machine gun clicks he will be silent and low key."

you would of said somthing like this --

unlike some photographers who clearly are not professional or experienced sometimes are firing off machine gun clicks and constantly moving around

Then I may well of agreed with you
