What kind of camera are you looking for? Compact, bridge or SLR? What kind of photos is he likely to take? Does he already have a camera, if so what?

Cearstaidh, I literally have no clue!! Currently, we have a small fujifilm that was about £150 ish, chosen on the basis of price and that it was pink.

He has expressed interest on many occasions in wildlife photography etc when we go on our country walks...

I have a nikon d3200. I'm purely point and shoot just now but it's easy to fiddle with all the settings and not ruin it. The photos it takes even on auto are stunning. I really love it. I got an ex display one, but it turned out only the box had been opened, everything was still wrapped up so mine was about £260 but usually £330 ish.

Our first 'entry level' digital slr was a canon 350d which came with an 18-55mm lens, which pretty much covered what we needed for point and shoot type photos, but still of a good quality for what it was. We ended up purchasing another lens 70-300mm for greater zoom capabilities, and both those lenses cover almost exactly what we personally need, even though we have moved on a bit with photos we take. There are plenty of functions on the 'entry level' dslr though if you want to use them! I think the entry level one now, comparable to the 350d, is a canon 1100, which you can get for about £300 including the first lens I was saying about ?

Changed my mind and went for a Canon 600 one, got a great deal on it too! I'll have to resist having a play when it arrives!

We have always had Canon cameras and really like them. They are easy to use and great quality.

For a couple of lens options, try the canon 50mm f1.8...reasonable lens that doesn't break the bank and is a good semi fast short telephoto on your camera. Also look at some Sigma telephoto or zoom lenses. They are not too bad glass, specifically if you aim for the lenses with the larger apertures....(avoid f5.6)

Do you get software with this such as PS elements or do you already own something like this??? If not, this is essential to getting the best out of your camera......

It is often bundled with new cameras. So hopefully will come with what you ordered.

I had an Canon Eos 450D (bought it 5 years ago) and still use it loads now. Takes amazing shots and I think I paid about £400 for it at the time.
