Can any Belfast Hitchers help?

Claire14, 22 December, 2008 at 18:19 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

Hiya, bit of a random question, but can't seem to find any sensible answers elsewhere!

I've booked a surprise trip to Belfast for me and H on Sat - Mon. However on chatting to him have just realised there's an Old Firm game on. Where would be a sensible place to watch this in the city centre? He is a Glaswegian Rangers fan, but not of the hard core variety, more the watching at home with friends over a quiet beer type! He wont be wearing a strip or lairy (sp?)!! Just want somewhere we can both sit and watch it over a couple of pints.

Also while I'm here, any must sees? Neither of us have ever been to Belfast before.

Thanks in advance Smiley smile

Not from Belfast but visit there once a year or so for the ice hockey. I think Belfast Giants are playing at home this weekend if you fancy something to do in the evening. Robinsons (opposite Europa Bus Station) has TVs that they usually show the football on. Alternatively, there is a sports bar in the Odyssey complex (Rockies???) that will have it on. You must go to The Crown Liqor Salon - a National Trust pub, fab - ring ahead and book a booth for lunch! McHugh's and Robinsons always have live music on Saturday nights which is pretty good. There's the new shopping centre although I haven't been there. Do an open top bus tour or a black cab taxi tour to see the murals, Harland and Wolfe etc. Belfast is great. Where are you staying?

I can't help with the footie question.

I went to Belfast a couple of months ago and I really loved it. Visit The Crown, it's a pub now owned by the National Trust and has all the original fittings with little booths, it really is fabulous. There's the Belfast Eye, I didn't go on it but I've heard good things. I really enjoyed the bus tour, it's very interesting to see the peace walls and the murals. We also took a trip up to The Giant's Causeway and visited the Bushmills distillery.

I grew up near London during the peak of the bombings and I really didn't think I would be visiting Belfast as a tourist in my lifetime. I'd really like to go back again soon.

I think anywhere around the city hall should be fairly mixed/ok for the football but H is a Celtic fan so only know the more Celticy places. I think Tensquare have football matches on quite often and it's quit enice for food too.

The continental market might still be on and the belfast wheel is there too so you oculd do those then maybe some shopping (Victoria Square is the new centre) or an open bus/taxi tour. Where abouts are you staying?

If you have time you oculd take a trip out of Belfast but there is plenty to do in the city.

Bear in mind that a lot of sport bars won't show old firm games.

The Botanic Inn normally shows matches, but don't know if it'll show that one. Here's the website anyway, see if you can find any info there: www.thebotanicinn.com

Don't know what time you arrive on Saturday but St George's Market is nice on a Saturday morning. It's just a wee market, usually with live music playing. Quite nice for an early Saturday dander.

The Merchant Hotel is also gorgeous for cocktails at night if you like to go to very fancy places, it's lovely. You could maybe take a walk about the university area, see Queen's University, see some of the old streets around there. There's a starbucks at the end of elmwood avenue too, which is nice to sit and watch the world go by.

Victoria Square is lovely for shopping - they have a big lookout point at the top (I think you get free tickets in House of Frazer) where you can see the whole of Belfast. I'm scared of heights so didn't make it to the top, but it's supposed to be lovely!

Dunno what there is to see around the Titanic Quarter, I don't know much about it. Harland and Woolfe cranes are out there, very near the odyssey arena. Dunno much about that area but the odyssey is ok - cinema, eating. Normally filled with teeny-boppers in short skirts on a saturday tho, not such a pretty sight! ?

I think the bus tours are supposed to be good - everyone says seeing the murals are good, but having grown up with them, I don't think much of them! ?

I'm sure there's more to do, it's so hard to think of exciting things when thinking about the place you live in!!
