Can anyone help my poor fingers?!

Alice_In_Wonderland, 19 February, 2013 at 10:16 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

Getting a bit stressed, and when I'm stressed I have a tendancy to pick at my fingers (kind of like a dog pulling at fur I guess! ?)

If I catch myself doing it I stop, but often I don't even realise I'm picking ☹️

It's got to the point where most of my fingers now look like this...

Someone help?! I don't want nasty scabby fingers for W-day!! ?

No advice but feel your pain! I had a little bit of skin, pulled it with my teeth and am now sat at my desk in pain! I don't know if work would consider this as a reason to be sent home..? Worth a try? haha I know people use that stuff that doesn't taste very nice when they are trying to stop biting their nails. Maybe you could also put it around the edges too?

My mum tried this with me when I was young and I just used to lick it all off, have an icky taste for a few mins and then continue to bite away!

    I've always done this.

The only thing I found that would help was to paint my nails nicely. In an ideal world I'd get them done all the time but the budget version of that was just to paint them myself. I tend to pick at the nail varnish instead of the skin, so I have to re-do them every couple of days. I'd just do them in bed or watching telly.

Tried the bitey stuff years ago, but I don't really bite at them so it didn't really help ☹️ I more "worry" at them with my other fingers!

Might try giving myself a nice manicure - as you say, I might pick at that instead! Worth a try! It's getting a bit sore I have to say!

The only other thing I could think was wrapping all my fingers in plasters!!! ? Trouble is I won't heal underneath them!

    Ohh Sam they are lovely!

I used to do this all the time, then when I started having my nails done with acrylic my nails where too thick to start pull at tiny bits of skin so they healed up completely and I haven't gone back to picking even when I haven't got false nails on.

Oh now THAT'S a good plan Kjay!

I've only ever had acrylic nails once, but as I remember they were too thick to even scratch an itch satisfactorily, let alone pick ?

Bit disappointed that you didn't think mine was a good plan! But I agree, probably more acceptable to walk round with perfectly manicured nails ?

I also used to have acrylic/ gel nails for a while when I was trying to stop biting my nails. When I stopped having them done I found that I didn't bite them anymore because they had broken the habit.

Well actually, where I work your idea is probably more practical than a manicure!!! ?

I do this periodically, sometimes to very sore/bleeding. I can nibble all the way around the backs of fingers as well.

The habit went before the wedding for two reasons. I started wearing a plastic retainer on my teeth, which meant I couldn't bite the skin - and - something subconscious kicked in to stop me doing it, wanting to look nice (same as dieting, I didn't do it on purpose, I just started eating healthier and less).

Acrylic/gel nails are a winner as well - too thick to pick.

I do this too, especially when nervous. I had a set of gel overlays on which stopped me, until I bit them off. Since then I have painted my nails every few days to let them grow and this has stopped me biting my skin too as I want my whole hands to look nice.

    I googled:

Hangnails: caused by lack of protein, folic acid, and vitamin C.

But obviously you aren't helping the situation by picking! Make sure your hands are well moisturised, use Sudocreme on the actual wounds, and a cuticle oil all over your nails and cuticles to moisturise them and it will be less easy to pick at less rough skin.

All for getting a manicure as suggested, but it will hurt!!
