The only two I know of are 'A Long Walk to Freedom' which is the autobiography, and 'No Easy Walk to Freedom' - which is a collection of his speeches (or something ..... I think).

Sadly, I can't recommend either of them - as I haven't read either. Sorry !

Long Walk To Freedom is an excellent read, but you can't really call an autobiography "unbiased" ?

sorry, can't help on the OP. LWtF is the only one I've read.

Is the Long Walk to Freedom written by him himself?

I think H is wondering (or has heard something that makes him wonder) whether he is the absolute heroic figure he is usually made out to be (Mandela, that is, not H) and was hoping to find a book that is very unbiased and indepently written.

ETA: sorry ONE, I didn't see your post before writing this.

Come visit me for the afternoon ?, I lived through it all and worked in Nelson Mandela's presidential offices when he was in power, I can give you a first hand account of the years **** which is hardly a book but would make for very interesting conversation...

There's one just out/coming out soon by Elleke Boehmer. She was my lecturer at uni & one of the top experts in that field. I would say that it'll be the most unbiased & original book written about him so far. Might be a bit heavy in parts but she was very good at explaining complex issues in a way that was easy to understand. I think it's called Nelson Mandela & Post-Colonialism but I'm not 100% certain of that.

Thanks all - Magnolia, I'll look out for that book.

ClaireJ - wow, that sounds very interesting. I bet you've got a story or two to tell...
