Can cats and rabbits get along?

rachele, 15 September, 2009 at 13:18 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

To cut a long story short - I'm adopting a rescue bunny this weekend from a home where it was not looked after very well (The bunny is 2 years old and has only been kept in it's hutch, it's never, ever hopped on grass, poor bugger). I'm off to get the hutch and run tomorrow so it's all set up before it arrives.

So my Q is, I already have 2 cats - will I be able to integrate them all together so that they all get along? Will I ever be able to let the 3 of them potter around in the garden together, or will I have to constantly be watching incase my kitties decide to pounce?

Any help or tips on how to introduce them to each other would be most helpful. I'm determined to give this little bunny a better life than it's already had.

Thanks

R.

I had a cat and rabbits when i was younger, we had the rabbits in the run for a while, and the cat never seemed bothered. However, my friends cat would pounce in a second! I would leave it in the run for a while and see how the cats react, let the rabbit run around the garden when your there, beware - little escape artists! and they run fast! Good luck getting it back in the run! lol! In the end my cat was scared on the rabbits. But my cat was a wuss!

I would say it depends on the cats. Mine hunts rabbits like he does birds and would have no conscience in pouncing. But I'm sure some cats wouldn't bat an eyelid!

I think it depends on the cats, introduce them slowly and see how they react.

My dog used to get on fantastic with my bunnies and used to mother and clean them like they were his babies. It was very cute, I can't see why a cat couldn't get on with them the same.

It definitely depends on the cat, mine is a bit of a hunter (mainly mice and birds)

Tommy bunny was pretty big when we got him and initially she tried to stalk him a couple of times when he was hopping about the garden. Tommy just thought it was some sort of great game and kept running up to her, which freaked her out.

Now she is slightly scared of Tommy ? and he chases after her. It is hilarious to watch.

They might but remember, a rabbit is a prey animal & a cat is a hunter so poor bunny is likely to be pretty terrified at first. It may also possibly be pretty stressed the first time it is let out if it's spent it's entire life in a hutch. Let bunny get used to it's freedom first before introducing cats. Also, a cat can kill a rabbit with one bit if it gets the it in the neck so be careful.

However, W_W said, bunnies can chase cats so it's not all one sided!

Thanks all for your replies - you've all been great!

I actually hoping that the kitties will be kind of ok with the bunny cos they're house cats, so have never seen a rabbit before. They potter around in the garden when it's sunny, and stalk birds and stuff (but no murders!), so I'm hoping that they have an initial fear of him to begin with!

But, yep, I'm going to introduce them slowly, I'm gonna get a big run for the bunny first, so it can have and get used to it's freedom gradually. I'll let the cats sniff him through the cage, and then I'll gradually start introducing them together in the garden, under the watchful eyes of me and H!

If all the introductions go well, I might try and housetrain him too, cos I don't want him outside in the winter on his own when the weather gets yukky. ?

I keep on calling it 'him', but we've decided to call him Mally!!

I've 2 rabbits in a large run with a hutch in the back garden, occasionally they go loose, next doors cats (5) have absolutely no interest in them at all, my advice would be to take it slow it took 6 weeks to get my two rabbits to accept each other, now they cuddle up together when they sleep. I did find this though that might be useful http://www.ehow.com/how_16480_introduce-rabbits-other.html

These are my two, Indie with the ears and Twiglet who sadly had her ears and tail bitten off by another rabbit, both rescue bunnys and lovely temperaments
