can i even start planning yet???

aecy, 14 March, 2010 at 11:13 Posted on Planning 0 19

Need some advice cos i'm going mad here, my boyfriend(?) has half proposed and weddings are no longer a taboo subject but he wont let me say anything to anyone till he's asked my dads permission and bought a ring and got down on 1 knee! I know its sweet but i nearly told his sister when she popped round for a coffee yesterday just so i could have someone else to get excited about it with! so anyone, please, a little advice about what i can plan or how to get my ring (he was planning to propose next weekend apparently but i ruined the suprise) Cheers

I had alot planned and an engagement party planned before he 'officially' proposed ?

And as for becoming obsessed, its part of the territory I think, just roll with it ?

    Congrats on your sorta-engagement ?

I think all girls plan their wedding before they get engaged officially!! I did. I looked at venues first as thats what decided everything else for me.

    Happy planning ? x

I'm in the minority and I say you can't plan if you're not engaged. Though it sounds like you are engaged if he's asked you...?

I join your minority - me and OH had talked about marriage before he proposed, but I didn't consider myself engaged....I dunno, I can't see the harm in perhaps looking htrough mags for ideas and seeing if there's any venues you particularly fancy but I wouldn't book anything yet personally.

I'd not starting planning fully yet, but you can start looking & taking note of things/sites that you like the look of. I'm single, but I'm also a HIB & have worked in this industry for several years now, so often see things that I like the look of or think are unique etc. Almost in the same way as if I see a travel program & think one day I'd like to visit there!! Haha! Wonder why I'm single.....?

Hmmm what do you mean half proposed?! i booked the honeymoon and arranged venue tours before he 'properly' proposed but we'd been talking about it for years and knew it would have to be this summer (worked out timewise - career breaks etc) so it depends on how your conversations have been going.

but as others have said, no harm in doing lots of research and starting to make a little file of things you like.

    xx

I'm afraid I'm with the girls who say you shouldn't plan. It's fine to have some ideas and obvioulsy having the inclination to marry!

Why rush things now though? You'll only be engaged for a short time (compared to the length of your marriage) so leave the fun until then!

Thanks for all the help ladies, i have been looking at venues and i'm really overwellmed lol

We've been talking about weddings for a while (my dads ill and we agreed over a yr ago that if he took a turn for the worse we'd have a quicky wedding so he cld be there) and the bf has let me look at bits on the internet since then. But srangly enough i'm holding off buying bridal magazines till i have the ring... is that strange?

Hey! that's kinda similar story to mine... I accidentally proposed to him initialy, but he has since asked properly several times. However, no ring as he's gonna let me chose my own! Jewelery is NOT his strong point... As regards planning, do what ever you feel comfortable with!

    Congratulations and Good luck! x

I'm hoping to get the ring sooner rather than later... he sat and wrote a list of his family today when i mentioned something weddingy and guest list related! I think i'm wearing him down lol

I'm in a similar situation to you and I've done quite a bit of research already! Me and my partner have been together over 6 years, have lived together for 4 and do pretty much everything together. We have both talked about getting married but money has been the main reason why he hasnt proposed yet. He's planning on proposing soon i.e. within the next few weeks so I didnt see the problem with getting a head start.

Some people may think we are sad in having a look to see whats out there, but who cares? Not everyone has the luxury of having a completely 'out of the blue' proposal and in today's society when most people have been together for ages before he pops the question, I dont think theres a problem with it. But there again, I am biased as I'm in a similar situation to you!

I've basically just looked on the internet for ideas - I wouldnt book/view a church or venue or anything until he officially proposed though.

I'm glad other people are in the same situation as me, and the forum on here seems really good for getting support and ideas etc - good to know as I'm sure the next year is going to be quite hectic for me!
